I sowed mooli seeds today, not grown them before, I sowed them with my brassicas; but unsure how prepped the ground should be... Do they grow deep like carrots or proud like regular radish?

I tried not to disturb the ground on that bed too much so my brassicas would be anchored in, worried they'll be stubby tho

I have also sown swede and turnips, and romanesco, along with radishes; regular and an oriental black type. Ooh and a red PSB.

I also need to sow lettuce, late carrots and Xmas potatoes, all of which should make the winter harvest more interesting.

I am wondering if I can get away with sowing some quick growing spring onions, or if I should invest in Japanese onions.... Or just plant the damn leeks that refuse to get pencil sized right now!

Is it too late to sow beetroot?

The mooli I grow appears to be 50/50 above and below ground. Similar to a normal radish but mahoosive!

Going this morning to buy the seeds hopefully so I'll let you know. It was a Thompson and Morgan packet last year I think.?
I have seed pods on the one plant I left for seed from last years crop, but I don't think they will be ripe enough for planting this year? Shame, as new seed was quite expensive.

Glad I read this. Was gonna plant out kale today but, yet again, it'll have to wait until I free up space elsewhere. Really fancy growing Mooli now I've realised it's not too late. Thanks.

Just been flicking though my seed packets and noticed that Komatsuna can be sown late August till March for growing under glass.

I plan on sowing some "Mini Mooli" and some Japana radishes soon - once I've found the space.

Mooli is brilliant - I try and grow it every year.

Besides eating it raw it's really nice roasted.

I would also recommend Pink Dragon.

It's something I mean to try every year but never manage it. Think it's cos I'm not really sure what to do with it. Think I've had it as a fresh pickle once but never prepared it myself.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I've had seeds of The Thing for a couple of years as well as numerous other oriental leaves, but they seem to get shoved to the bottom of the heap all the time. Still not sure about The Thing

Went out today 2/3 of my curly kale and 1/3 of my spring cabbage seedlings eaten. Found and destroyed the culprit and reset.

For stuff that matures in winter all I grow personally is:
                        Brussels
                        Potatoes
                        Leeks (Absolutely tons of them)
                        Swede

I also store carrots and other root veg in sand boxes. Toms in jars. Then with the sweetcorn, french beans, tomato sauces and calabrese in the freezer I can usually minimize supermarket veg until about March.

                          Well, following the advice in this thread I have some seeds (half price) to be sown now;

                          Mooli - Japanese
Mino early F1 hybrid (unwins- sow til September, full price four quid for about 80 seeds).

                          Chinese radish
Mantanghong F1 hybrid (unwins- sow til Aug, full price four quid for about 80 seeds).

                          and cauliflower
Snowball (T&M- sow October for coldframes or undercover, FREE with two packs of T&M seeds, about 100 seeds)

I don't usually like to grow F1s but it's been a rubbish season and I'm determined to grow somat!
Wouldn't have paid full price either...four quid for 80 seeds that there is every chance of me murdering! And as F1s, even they survive I can't save my own for next year?
                          Not blimmin likely!!!

Love to see there are stuff I can still put in the ground now! Think I'll be placing a seed order today! Is there any chance of me growing these successfully in central Scotland over winter?
