Blightwatch Alert

I signed up to the Potato Council Blightwatch Alert last year. I input several postcodes, mainly the Midlands.

All of them have come up (via their email service) that the conditions for blight are spot on recently. Be warned, though what you can do about it is a mystery to me. Bordeaux Mixture appears to have been banned.

The forecasts for the next few weeks are looking very dodgy for blight, with low pressure dominating and the resultant damp and sometimes warm and humid weather that goes with it. I tried dissolving Asprin Pene, it's a right pain so if you can get hold of some soluble Asprin it may be better.

I sprayed all my spuds and toms last week with asprin. Touch wood. Incidentaly bordeaux mix is legal until November I think, if you can get it.
I asked the chemist for two boxes of soluble asprin and he wanted to know what they were for, when I said for my tomatoes he said he didnt know they got headaches, he only let me have one box, sheesh!

For those determind to use bordeaux mix and devastated by the forth coming ban, it is quite easy to make your own. Instuctions are available online.
An alternative is to drink 3 bottles of Bordeaux wine and let the potatoes fight the blight on their own.

Conditions may be right for blight, but if you have no blight nearby - is it worth spraying.

I wait for both a Smith period warning, and a local blight warning before making up my mind to spray or not.

Got some soluble aspirin from the local chemist, along with some epsom salts. Guy in the shop was highly amused when I said they were both for my tomatoes.

I have a dose of bordeaux mix left from last year which I didn't use last season. But I hate using sprays. I think though all my spuds if I had to cut them down right now would produce a decent enough crop to have made it worth it, but would be good if they could survive a while longer really. Tempting.

I'm in Wiltshire and I understand it hits quite early here. Perfect weather for it at the moment and I got the same smith period warnings.
