Hardly anything is growing :(

We sowed several different seeds about a week to 10 days ago and so far nothing has started growing. We did carrots and potatoes and few days before these and they are going very well but everything else isn't at all. We sowed.....

Brussels
Runner Beans
Spring Onion
Cucamelon
Little Gems

and out of them not a single shoot. They have been watered well and are all in pots with good sunlight.

We want something to grow although at the minute we may just right this year off and get the actual plot ready for the new year as pots are great but our patch will be a lot better.

Any advice and are there any seeds we can buy that will definitely grow??

Brussels and little gems, as daft as it might sound it may be too hot put them in a shady part of the garden. You say they are well watered, is there a chance you over watered and they have rotted of (mainly thinking about the runners) I have only grown cucamelon this year and I found them to be tempermental little blighters.

Careful on the watering....soil/compost needs to be damp and no more....too wet and the seeds will rot

Oops! Maybe the watering has been the issue here! I think I may start again tomorrow with new seeds/beans.

I recall reading that lettuces can very difficult to germinate when it is warm and the advice was to sow in the afternoon so that the critical period was overnight and therefore cooler.

There may well be, I will leave that one and just use a different pot to see. Its sods law mine would do the same to be honest lol

I think the combination of heat and too much water could be to blame. Its possibly significant that the carrot seeds germinated - carrots hate being dry when young so over watering them will probably have done no harm.

Some wonderful person on the Vine taught me the foolproof way of getting lettuces to germinate.

You sow them in pots or modules and put them in the fridge overnight.

Then bring them out into the light and they germinate inside a week, sometimes in only 4 days.

Still havn't harvested any tomatoes yet. They're no where near being ready either.

Me too scoot (re the toms) but there's loads of green ones and the blight stays away there's plenty of summer yet for ripening!

For the runner beans pandasyard...mine have been most temperamental this year.
I found the best way was to germinate them indoors on wet tissue paper and only plant out the ones I knew were alive! I put the kitchen roll in an old ferrero roche box and they swelled within 24 hours and germinated properly a day or two later....works well with any type of bean or pea.

Is 7-10 days enough?
I was sowing carrots a few days back and I think it said allow 16-20 days for germination, not sure about the other bits as not a lot of instructions on them.

Muddled - I will give that a try, that's how my daughter did hers at school at that went really well even though it did end up dying after being in the house too long.

Kirk - I am probably being impatient, I have decided to calm down and give it a couple more days before I start re potting and what not.

Not been a good year for people starting out. A lot won't realise just what a bad year it has been for weather and could easily be put off.
