Had a four day break, and after seeing some other gardens I realise just how bad it has been in this area, My runner and french beans are well over six feet but no flowers, the peas at two and a half feet are the same, turnips with plenty of top growth, not the size of a golf ball, carrots and parsnips hardly showing after five weeks and the onions flattened with high winds and heavy rain a couple of weeks ago, the courgetts have had one courgett which rotted and now every flower is male. One other thing I have noted is that I have two wall baskets planted with begonias and geraniums, both with the same mix of compost and feeding, one has reasonable growth while the other tapers down in size towards the wall corner, which would indicate the cold wind is catching it.
On the plus side I have good potatoes and cabbage, and a good crop of broad beans, and the expectations of a better crop next year.

My sympathies, Rary.
Whenever I feel inclined to moan at what mother nature and the weather combine to range against me here in the Midlands, I only have to turn on the weather report to realise I'm in clover compared with the stuff you get thrown at you north of the border.

You need real skill to grow plants in the climate you have. Basically I only have to dig a hole and drop seeds in. I'm a southern softie.

It all sounds pretty amazing - so, there's no text book gardening then?? Haha!!
I have yet to enjoy/endure the pain and pleasure of spoiled crops yet - hoping to get started next spring. Actually looking forward to winter(!!!) (don't quote me) getting my plot dug over and mulched, choosing seeds and getting them started in my greenhouse early next year! It's so exciting - so as I say, can't wait to join you for a moan!!
Ps my VERY LATE tomato plants have got some fruits on and my chillies too!!

Wow! Sounds like very hard work keeping anything growing there! I'm tucked away in the (sub-tropical?!?!) Midlands.
