I still have loads of flowers left on my plants with few tomatoes. Does the rubbish summer contribute to how many flowers turn into tomatoes and how many just stay as flowers? Or is it something else?

I don't think the rubbish summer makes them stay as flowers, although a lack of insects due to bad weather could result in poor pollination. It is more likely that the cold weather is slowing down the development of the fruit so that they grow more slowly and take longer to turn red. Most tomato plants will continue to produce new flowers until the frost (or blight) kills them off.

My three outdoor Tumbler are laden with fruit to the extent the stems are being damaged, I have only had about 20 toms off them so far.

Next week I will cut off all the flowers and some of the smaller fruit, then as soon as there is space they will go into the GH.

So the cool summer has basically slowed the whole fruiting process down.

And yet I had three sungold left over so I put them in pots outside, and they ripened before the green house ones!!! nothing seems straightforward with tomatoes.

Yes. I think it is not so much an overall cool summer as cold nights, and I think this is why greenhouse toms have also been slowed down. Every time the temperature falls below 10 degrees it checks the growth, and there have been countless nights this summer when that has been the case.

                        • Not one here yet, and have to say not many green ones either! Compared to last year it's a poor crop!

                          • I've got a couple of sungolds which are starting to turn orange. Other than that, nothing ripe from 18 plants

I'd deliberately sown them extra early this year too, not sure what else I could've done. Tomatoes and squash seem to be my doomed crops this year.

                            • Just a few Sungold but lovely and sweet. Put a few plum plants in spaces at at the lottie, no red ones yet but plenty of fruit which I am surprised at. Can always ripen in conservatory or in drawers.

                              • You ripen your tomatoes in your drawers? You must have to sit very still.

                                Sorry, couldn't resist.
