  • Ah, that's what men have down their trousers what makes them sit with their legs so wide. they don't want to crush their tomatoes. It all makes sense now.

    • My tomato store is finally starting to look a little healthier:

      Top shelf (from left)
Balconi red (nearly finished now), Balconi yellow, Sweet Aperitif, Garden Pearl

      Bottom shelf
      Totem, Sungold

      In front
      Shirley (from greenhouse), more Sungold.

          • Ive had one or two Marmande and Moneymaker but the Marmande seem to be in a race to ripen now and theres some whoppers there fair play.

Just had some tumbling toms sliced up on top of and grilled with my cheese on toast , happy days .

              • The Tomato plants outside this year have been shocking to be honest. Very few tomatoes on them and they are no where near ripening.

                • I have some lovely looking plants, but the only red tomatoes have been off a Sweet Millions plant so far, and only had about 10 from that (mostly split)

You could try picking them when they're orange & ripen indoors for a couple of days. I had one tomato split,it was an unnoticed red one in my blow-away grow tent, the hundred or so other tomatoes have been fine. I'm growing sweet million too.

                    • Well last night I had to cut down half the 11 outdoor plants. Disappointing in that they ripened late and then the cold nights/windy location added to blight have finished them off without more than about 6 fruit. I would say that's OK because these were the surplus plants and I have 7 in the greenhouse but they too are very late and have ripened little. Bear in mind my father grew tomatoes professionally and I grew up with the things I would say I know plenty about them if nothing else. Just not enough sunshine here in the Suffolk area this year. But in contrast I've had a better crop of peppers and chillies and cucumbers than ever before!

                      • I have had red tomatoes - a grand total of 3 so far, off 13 plants. The best part is they've all just started to ripen and from tomorrow I'm away for two weeks. If I pull them all off the plants tonight and put them in the fridge, what are the chances they'll be ok when I get back? I don't really have time to do anything to prep them before I go. If they had fully ripened I'd have thrown them in a pan to cook down into a relish I make, but I'm not sure how well that would work with mostly still green tomatoes.

                        • Tomatoes ripening slowly here,I'm picking them everyday, but I've got over 40 plants (can't remember exact amount, but it helps to have loads!) The weathers got better here, really warm today & the weekend forecast is 22 degrees or something.

Pull them off the plants and put on the windowsill, they will ripen slowly indoors.

                              • I've got about 4, unfortunately tomorrow is the last day of sunshine up here for a while so that may be it! There are a few on the turn so fingers crossed.
