water? dont you need to add whiskey?
my basil babies are v. lanky, but I'll give them a day or so - they're in the mini greenhouse, so I guess temperatures fluctuate quite a lot.

also question about tarragon? is it too early? only I was looking for plants in the supermarket and the garden centre, and there was nothing growing...

You could pinch out the tops, this should bush them up.

looked at them just now (just got back from v. early monring meeting in London... bleurgh!). they are a bit lanky and pale, I think I'll leave them till tomorrow and then pinch/trim them a bit.

SueA - thanks for your tip about splitting the basil. OH split a pot into 3 and they are all doing well. Ours are on the window sill - S. facing.

It sounds like the compost is spent, you may need to feed them.

Potash, tomato feed won't do them any harm, compost is spent really quickly in tubs, a few weeks and you have washed out the nutrients with watering. Any signs of paleness e.g. yellow, means a deficiency and means they need feeding.

Haven't seen French Tarragon in the garden centre yet (only Russian), but mine is going great guns. Just goes to show you need to keep the faith sometimes. It withered and looked dead and gone in autumn due to North Walian gales and sideways rain, but I figured I had nothing to lose by leaving the empty looking pot in the (cold) greenhouse for the winter. The root system hung on in there, and now it looks better than last year; bushy not lanky. It was originally started from seed.
