Cauliflower problem.

Help please!
We have tried every year [for at least six years] planting out in different locations....
For the first time since we have had our `lottie` we have managed to achieve a result to actually grow cauliflowers. I use the word result as an actual happening ,not as a description of success as although the centres have turned white and then yellow/brown the hearts have spread out to become quite flat.Guidance as to what the problem/s is/are from the `great ones` out there would be most appreciated.

I think you are supposed to bend the leaves over the centres to stop them going yellow in the light. However, I have yet to successfully get anything resembling a cauliflower head to form at all so I know nothing!

Sounds like it's bolting. As Pene says, either bend a leaf or break one off & put it over the curd to stop it going yellow. As with all Brassicas, Caulis need a really firm root base so when planting out, the ground need to be firmed down then firmed down again, they don't like to be rocked in the wind. Plus they also like the soil to be on the cool side so may pay to water with ice cubes or iced water.

I actually tie my cauliflowers same as some folk tie cos lettuce and break off an outer leaf (carefully checked for pests) and lay it over the curd. I have up and down years but always feed with plenty of nettle tea

I cant grow caulis from seed, have managed measly ones from bought plants, they go yellow, fail to thrive, bolt. But I keep trying, because one year they will succeed!

I will try again next year but if after carrying out the advice I still fail then I think a visit to Waitrose for one of theirs will be the answer.
