  • Kale rotting at the crown?

My Red Russian kale is suddenly going very curly at the crown and I pulled one plant today because it appeared to be going slimy and rotting where the leaves met the stem. Sorry, no pics - any ideas?

I know kale is curly, but I'm used to Red Russian growing tall and having deeply divided but mostly flat leaves.

    Thank you!

I haven't grown kale but I've had a google and the symptoms you describe don't really fit any of the usual diseases. Could it be black rot?

Mine does something similar when it has been attacked by brassica bugs - a type of shield bug.
