Has anyone grown this and what is it .been daft enough to purchase some seeds has was told it can grow all year round .
Am I wasting my time or is it worth growing.

It's good, and now is a good time to sow it. Its a relative of cabbage and turnip and it forms a strange looking swollen stem which can be upto the size of a tennis ball. It tastes a bit like broccoli stem and has a nice crunchy texture and can be eaten raw in salads or cooked as a veg. It makes nice soup too.

Like all cabbages it needs protecting from cabbage white butterflies and slugs can eat the seedlings so if you have a slug problem sow it in modules and plant out when it has 4-6 leaves.

I don't grow it any more. I just found it too variable for me (none-swelling stems) and OH gets indigestion from it - leaves and stem. I'm sure if I had persevered, I would have cracked it eventually and I do like the taste of the stems. Nice recipe for it grate draw into oranges in a "coleslaw" somewhere.

Got a couple of empty beds at the moment so will grow it in one of them before I start my rebuild in winter.

I only did three seeds, all grew.... Just about t harvest my one remaining one as the other two got eaten by the damn slugs.

Starting to want my balcony back no slugs up there

I love the stuff - it does grow well all year round though shadier beds work better in full summer for plants sown in Spring. I've hidden some in my squash beds and in the popcorn and so far, so good.

Just sowing some now to plant out amongst the (netted) broccoli.

^^^^^ The shade thing is important. I think that was where some of my problems started because I was doing in in the tunnel through the year. So it was good in autumn/winter but rubbish through late spring and summer.
