  • Anyone Fancy Joining Me?.............If I Remember.

Fancy a crazy experiment?............I know it's been around for an eternity but next year I'm gonna have a bash at growing some stuff without compost after germination. Simply using flower buckets with water & feed. Please feel free to remind me nearer the time as I' sure to forget............

Growing fruits and vegetables with no soil? No problem just add water & air

I'm going the whole hog - and giving up food altogether.

I'll spend my days standing in a bucket of water, whilst getting gently misted with marmite and olive oil.

My book - ' Losing Weight the Big Mallly Way' is available from all reputable sellers at 16.99 (whilst stocks last).

Welcome Scarlet. I'm gonna kick of with a washing up bowl & a piece of polystyrene sheet the same size as the bowl. I'll cut 1" diam holes in the polystyrene & just sit it on the water. I have a few Brassicas ready for the experiment. I may pot up to flower buckets if they grow............time will tell. I've also got a few Courgettes ready to be dunked.............

I've been doing it for years - my plants regularly cope with over watering!

You need to ask a nutter why?...............Ok, seeing as you asked:

                  a) I need something to keep me occupied over the winter months.
                  b) I want to see if I can get a heads start for spring.
                  c) Rainwater is free so should save a fortune on compost which can be spent on liquid feed.
                  d) I want to see if slugs can swim...............

I've known slugs to manage to cross a tray full of water

Not sure about this, partly because anything DIY is likely to test my skills beyond their limits and anything pre-made looks very expensive, and partly because the pre-made stuff seems to require an electric pump, which is not practical in my garden.

Is Hortag not the inert medium to hold the plant upright? I think you can use rockwool as well?

I am having a head start, this is mine that has been growing on damp tissue for a little while now. I had no intention of leaving it like it but it seemed fun to see how they would turn out especially as I already have some growing outside.

I remember Bob Flowerdew grew lettuces just in water. They were in polystyrene seed trays, and he floated them in a water butt. and left them to get on with it. No slug damage at all
