  • OMG OMG I got a ....

    .....potato!!

I have 2 plastic dustbins with about 12 potato plants in each and they are now flowering. However I noticed a couple of days ago that they have started to get black speckles on the leaves

So I had a little root around (well, I got my OH to!) and he brought out a little potato! It was the size of a large marble and I am SO excited! I only accidently grew cabbages last year and I hate cabbage so have never eaten anything I have actually grown. I boiled this little thing up and ate it with some real butter

I'll keep an eye on the plants now and if they start to get badly black leaves I think I'll pull them and eat the little new potatoes!

When I had a rummage in the potato pot (most were in the ground but my granddaughter planted some in a big pot) the top ones were small the underneath they were HUGE. You might have more in there than you think! enjoy 'em!

Thanks for that Flummery. I had a rummage on the top and only found small ones, and was a bit disappointed. I'll rummage a bit deeper!

How do you accidently grow a cabbage?

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

LOL ~ I bought a tray of cauliflower seedlings ~ actually I bought 2 trays cos I got 12 plants!! When they were growing I kept saying to my Mum 'when does the white bit appear?' and she spent her time telling me how impatient I am (which is probably true!!)

But then she came to visit me and said I was right, that the 'floret' bit wasn't appearing and wasn't ever going to appear cos they were cabbages See, I knew something was wrong

For the 2 weeks after they had grown, every time I visited somebody I had one or two beach ball sized cabbages in tow as a 'gift' LOL!

You can get to like cabbages, I have been having a go at growing most things just to see if I could and I hardly ever ate cabbages except in coleslaw, now, because I actually managed to grow some really good ones this year, have been eating them - steamed in cheese sauce is very good indeed.
That leaves parsnips, brussel sprouts and caulis, childhood trauma too strong on these I fear!

If it helps Curvy Vixen, my husband absolutely hates cabbages but I started to stir fry them in olive oil, with garlic and pine nuts and now he always asks when is cabbage on the menu!

Well it's funny you should say that ladies cos this year I'm growing brussel sprouts ~ again, not sure why really cos I hate those too They're just little cabbages!!

But I did say that if I really got some brussels from the plants I would try them stir fried with pine nuts and garlic and stuff...must have seen it somewhere for it to stay in my mind! Cheese sauce sounds good over sprouts too! That's the only way I can eat cauli's and broccoli so might give it a shot.

I'll keep that recipe Jennie and try them cooked like that, thanks! Sue, you need to roast your parsnips...once they are done pour a little honey and some sesame seeds over them...mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I'm not growing cabbage this year cos OH hates it and I'm not too bothered but now I think it might be on the menu next year haha! I just love roasted parsnips though, cant get enough of them! And I too will be trying the stirfry with garlic etc idea, sounds yummy Jennie.
