Which tomatoes would you say is best for making sauces? I need something that's sweet, sour and very juicy.

    • Big like for Pantano Romanesco. Very similar to Marmande, but indeterminate so easier to grow and by and large the toms are a bit bigger than Marmande. Just had a couple in cheese sandwiches. So tasty.

Very vigorous growers, not prone to splitting or blossom end rot, easy to peel if wanted when fully ripe, and great flavour. Plus, surprisingly quick to start cropping.

I bought the seeds on a whim from Premier Seeds Direct, so very cheap.

Well for sauces you generally use tomatoes that don't have much juice as that boils off...you want a paste tomato.
I'm a fan of black tomatoes so I would choose black icicle. It has great taste, fresh and cookedv and is a heavy cropper. Pantano is delicious but needs a long season and doesnt have a huge crop.

on my grow list every year but I think they are too good to cook with They require warm evenings and a glass of wine

          • Sungold out shines all the rest.
My Garden Pearl in baskets have produced loads but I find they don't taste of much.
            Anyone else noticed that ?

Expect the worst in life and you will probably have under estimated!

Yes, not for cooking with. I hadn't meant my reply as a recommendation for cooking toms. Thanks for pointing that out.

I haven't grown it but have read several reviews that say there are better toms available to go in baskets. I do grow Sungold - kids and OH love them but I find the taste almost artificially sweet.

I agree that black ones are the best, I like Japanese Black Triefele quite rich. I also like Kibits Ukranian, they're red, rich without much juice but very much like an Italian plum (I can't grow Italian varieties for whatever reason).

I'm waiting for Black Icicle, there seem to be lots of fruit but not ripe yet.

My Garden Pearl are really tasty this year, juicy and sweet. I've grown them in hanging pots in the polytunnel and they're early as well as sweet.

I find you have to pick them when they are pink, rather than red, so just before they look fully ripe - by the time they are red, I agree they are a bit bland.

                              Very disappointed with these.
Two plants grown each with poor quality fruit. I've grown this before and don't remember it being this bad. This is the better plant The toms on the other plant have split open and are a drab purplish colour. Horrible.

My Japanese Black Trifele are doing well as well. It seems to be a good year for quantity (touching wood against blight) but they're taking a long time to ripen.
