No extra support. It just sat happily on the plant until I removed it.

From the left - Sunbaby (Chris11 seeds), the huge beefy pink ones are Negro di Crimea, back Black Prince (Chris11 seeds), in front of them a couple of tigerella and alicante (Chris11) and on the right gardeners delight.

The Negro di Crimea taste AMAZING, Black Prince not far behind.

        • This is the first year that I haven't grown Sungold but will grow them again next year. I tried Mountain Magic outside this year and they have been superb, been picking them for a fortnight. In the greenhouse I have 5 Super Marmande. The fruits are fairly large but not many of them and the plants themselves have struggled in the heat - much smaller than they should be. I tried cucumber Delistar for the first time this year and will definately be growing them next year.

          • My favourite cherry is no longer Black Cherry - it's (Deano's) Rosella. Thanks so much for putting them in the seed circle last year

As well as the Rosella, I've got Nectar Rose and Jaune Flamme ripening in the greenhouse border, plus Kibitz in tubs. The Polish Linguisas and King Humbert have a heavy set, but are still stubbornly green.

                    • The Negro di Crimea look great. I have grown a Pink Brandywine that I got from a friend which is very tasty.
It certainly is making me change my growing intentions for next year.
I am grateful for the tips from this thread.
                      Thanks all.

Babru they do take a lot of water in baskets, I find the bigger the basket the better, I've used smaller basket before and they need watering a couple of times a day and dry out quickly, the larger baskets are better. These days I prefer to grow them in large pots, or buckets, definitely less watering than baskets, though I've not done any tumblers this year. I agree tumbler types are amazing and the last to get blight too
Depending how far they trail, maybe I could put them in a tall pot, on some bricks. That way I could get them in more soil, so less drying out, and potentially include them in an automatic watering system.

                        • Six different ripe tomato varieties enjoyed this evening

Rosella, Black Icicle, Spanish Big Globe, Red Cherry, Cherry Roma, Oranze.

(Plus a half-grown, un-ripe Golden Marconi sweet pepper. We don't mind them green, and have got plenty of others ripening )

                          • The outdoor Sungold have started to ripen over the past week or so, and I picked 10 more today. Also picked the first Garden Pearl yesterday and the Red Alert at the allotment are starting to turn red.

                            • I've grown tomatoes for the first time, in a blow-away. They are now ripening so had a taste test with the OH. One plant each of three varieties: Totem - fairly bland and tasteless; Red Alert - much sharper and tastier; Gardener's Delight - very sweet and tasty. Gardener's Delight also started ripening first, a couple of weeks ago, and have so far have had a dozen of them, compared with one each from the other two.

                              No comparison really.

We've had a really good summer so far here in Edinburgh, but not the scorching temperatures I think many of you have had down south. This is probably as good a crop as I could ever hope to get, though I'll have my greenhouse up for next year, which will mean I may be able to start earlier.

I have loads of green tomatoes, I hope lots of them ripen up. I took the tops off them a few days ago, as recommended elsewhere on this forum, which I hope may help.

                              • Are we the only people who find Sungold rather dull and bland?
