I just had a read through this and thought you might find it helpful.
BBC - Dig In : How to grow your veg on a windowsill.
Do you have any family close by who have a garden that you could use a bit of? Even a little bit of space for a tub or two would help.I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. Thomas A. Edison

If you particularly like Little Gem, there is a variety called Winter Gem, which is similar but bred to grow in low light levels. I grew some last year and it was good.
I grow most of my lettuce indoors on windowsills or under grow lights as I find this a satsifactory way of avoiding slugs, aphids and caterpillars. Works well for loose leaf lettuce, not so good if you like big, firm hearts.Last edited by Penellype; 15-08-2015, 12:47 PM.A life is like a garden. There's still time to get some lettuce in. All the better if you have a greenhouse.
Rocket is something else you might like to try. A bit of an acquired taste, but a quick grower.Pain is still pain, suffering is still suffering, regardless of whoever, or whatever, is the victim.

I am still sowing and growing all types of lettuce outdoors. I think you still have time.
And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
