Overwintering onions

Hi All

I have just harvested my white onions - i know i should leave them on the ground to dry but as you are aware its a bit wet out there. I was planning to dry them in my spare room on the window sil. Just a few questions

1. should i wash the mud off - don't want to make them to wet
2. should they be lay flat or is hanging best - might hang them from my curtain rail.

Due to the weather I am drying mine in one of my mini greenhouses on the wire shelf. Just spread them out and they seem to be doing okay so far. I guess everyone has their own methods though.

I haven't, just brushed the soil off when it had dried enough. I've zipped it just enough to keep the rain off them but not done it up cpmpletely to keep airflow round them.

I've lifted my garlic and trying to dry it off. I didn't wash it - just scraped the rough and dirt off. I had it in the house to start with - but the smell of garlic was all pervading ! It's now in trays (the racks from the defunct dishwasher) in the shed. If we could get a few dry sunny days I would have them outside to dry off - but ....
I'm sure the same will be true for your onions.

Had to lift mine, too. Hardly any leaves left thanks to the slugs and snails. I put them in a 3-tier wire basket and hung it on the washing line to dry them off, but it rained and rained and rained, so they are now hung from a beam in the shed. Didn't intend to wash them, but the rain did it for me.

thats why I lifted mine as some where being eaten - some of them are really big but a few small ones. Don't care really, just glad I am starting to get some veg from the allotment and the hard work is paying off. I have a picture of the onions on my blog if anyone is interested having a look.

Garlic vs Onions

I believe that garlic should dry inside to stop it drying too much but onions outside. Always providing you have dry weather otherwise its Hobsons choice.

BTW the garlic smell soo goes as they dry, ours are still in the hallway hanging from the rafters. Perhaps I should post a pic in the 'show-off' thread.
