Watch out for wasps, they love rotting apples................

Hmmmm, yes, wasps ...
Had a bit of a run-in with some today. Glad I was wearing thick gardening gloves when picking up the windfalls, they were swarming with wasps.
Think they were a bit woozy, just lying around in the apples ...

Do apples in compost not make the compost more acidic from the citric acid? Then requiring you to lime the ground more often? Just speculating here...
Used our apples in last years compost which made a horrible, soggy, damp, smelly and cold to handle(during compost laying season) pile. Next time Ill just rake the apples up for the sheep and deer.
Getting battered by wasps too as it was a mild previous winter which didnt kill as many off, they have taken over my barn and now made inroads into the house.
The wet mess would have been due to the high water content of apples. They needed mixing with some "Browns" - twiggy sticks, paper, cardboard etc. I know it is often recommended not to add too much citrus to the bin in any one time. If you've got a good mix overall it shouldn't be too acidic.
