  • Cold tonight

As if we hadn't enough problems with the cool summer and things not ripening, tonight is forecast to be cold even for September. The current minimum temperature chart for 6am Sunday looks like this:

So mid to low single figures can be expected unless you live near the sea. Time to shut the greenhouse/polytunnel and cover outdoor vulnerable plants with fleece if you haven't been doing so already

(these figures have been revised up a bit since last night, when 2s and 3s were more apparent).

Here, it's already been down to 7 or 8C most nights this week - according to my greenhouse thermometer, anyway

Shutting the greenhouse door overnight resulted in the plants dripping with condensation, perfect for Botrytis - so I've been leaving the doors open slightly and keeping my fingers crossed.

      Good luck everyone!

Some of my tom plants have purple tinges on the leaves. I can't leave the door open a smidge as it's hinged, one of the (few) disadvantages of the Plastic Fantastic. Am hoping some warmer weather kicks in for a couple of weeks, then I'll be resigned to losing the lot to botrytis. It's been a good season for me - imagine how amazing it would have been with a proper summer!

Yes, autumn usually plays herself in over several weeks. This year, straight in! Dark and chilly.

          And the grey August....

It's as if the seasons have been jolted out of sequence.

They're forecasting some nice weather for next week, which will be good. Maybe I'll take a trip to the Wisley flower show. More cool nights ahead, though.

Just put some some washing out, and its turned quite chilly out. So I've shut up the greenhouse and fingers crossed.

Weird. 2 nights ago it was pretty cold here, needing gloves and fleece. Today it's warmish so maybe you're getting our colder weather????

A low of 5.7 in the greenhouse and everything is dripping wet......

Time to start stripping it out, I think.

Went down to 4.3 degrees in my polytunnels last night, that puts an end of getting anything decent from my melons this year, I was about sick of eating melons this time last year, I'll never complain about gluts again ( maybe).

My melons haven't even flowered, let alone set fruit yet!
