Fertilizers for onions, what do you use?

What fertilizers to you use? I know some people use chempak but was wondering if there is any others I can get hold of easier.

Also does anyone know how many weeks it takes before I can harvest winter onions. Just so I can set a month to harvest.

I don't use any fertiliser on my onions, just mulch them with grass clippings. Not sure about the number of weeks to harvest, just wait till the stalks go yellow then the should be ready.

I use rabbit poo but then the kids have a rabbit, so that's handy...
Usually harvest my overwintered ones in June, but as Mally says, you'll know by looking at them...With onions, you don't have to be rigid as with some other crops, as you can start pulling them individually for use as soon as they are a decent size

if you mean over wintering onions,they will not be ready until June/July next year,all they do over the winter is establish themself,they look like they might be no good,but wait until the spring when they burst into life and turn into onions, as the weeds start to grow.

There's lot of info in those Growing Guides - and links to useful threads too. Always a good place to start and then ask the puzzling questions afterwards.

Anne Swithinbank talks about growing onions in pots in the October magazine, maybe if grown under cover you might get a crop a bit earlier, never tried it myself, mentions compost requirements too.

I use Spuds Galore at about 2/3 the rate used for Potato's so about 50g per square metre. This is from the Commercial version of Spuds Galores website on the use of the Product by Farmers.

It states: Onions: 375 to 625 kg/ha as a base dressing so that;s 37.5g to 62.5g per square metre.

Not too thick or they'll go mushy & stink..........a couple of inch should do it.
