I planted some rat's tail radishes probably 6 - 8 weeks ago. They're now big, leafy plants with no sign of the hot, edible pods. Just pulled a couple up to find a conical white root about 3in. long, half an inch thick. It's not been the best summer along with the fact that I'm about 30 miles west of Aberdeen so could these be the reasons they haven't produced the pods yet? Everything else I've planted has been, overall, successful, so what's up with these?

Its normally the seed pods that are the radishie bits. They will have to flower first and then the seed pods will appear.I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. Thomas A. Edison

Flowers?! No. No flowers. Might have missed the boat this year, then. Ah well. It's the first year of growing anything for me so lots to learn. Hope fully get more success next year (I'll plant them earlier for amstart). Thanks for your replies, all

Harvested mine a few weeks ago. To be honest I forgot to harvest the roots and then let them go to seed.

Although James Wong has seeds specifically for ratstails you can harvest the seed pods from most varieties - don't let them fully mature and they should be crisp and tasty.
Mine were mostly Cherry Belle as I've got loads of these free with magazines and as I'm the only one who eats radishes I tend to have too many - although I also eat the leaves as greens so nothing on a radish goes to waste
