  • Apps for veg growing

I have looked through the play store so many times hoping to find a good gardening diary, seed sowing guide, plant care guide...
Just really doesn't seem to exist.

Surely with the masses of knowledge out there all these things should be easy, even to cocmbine it in one app.

Are there any apps that people use and love?
    Perhaps I'm just being blind.

Big mally linked me to a PDF seed sowing chart.... Which is awesome, but it doesn't have care guides or notes, and like the others it doesn't ..... Can't.... Have a the varieties for example the whole I ust bought kale, brocolli, cabbage etc to plant now and other winter varieties of things.

I probably want too much, I usually do. But I think novices like me and even proper seasoned Gardiners could do with something they can just draw on for a recap

I'm old fashioned so prefer books as I can add notes in the margins easily too. I also have a spreadsheet each year which lists all my seeds with how many to sow and when. I fill in when I sow and any helpful info as I go. Really useful to look back on each year, doesn't need Internet access (I prefer to be off line and free when gardening as its my mental release from day to day pressure). Also, I can record what I want and make it fit my conditions, never seen an app that can do that.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Yeah I been looking at the guides...

See spreadsheets I can't use on my phone.... Not in a readable.or easy way.
Plus I hate them. No pictures etc, don't like being stuck at puter when I'm not editing..
App can do all that you said and more, including notes, and keep record of what you've sow. When each year. Even remind you feeding and watering regimes, when to plant out etc.

        I can't understand why one doesn't exist

I have no idea if there is an app available but I suspect that it would be rather complicated because there are so many variables that affect seeds. Variables such as soil temperature, moisture in the soil, air temperature and ph of the soil to name but a few.

As you say there is "masses of knowledge out there" most of us try to apply that knowledge to our own circumstances. Sometimes it fails and other times it works, the next time it fails again. Just look at the thread for growing spring onions. What I did this year may go horribly wrong next year.

So I would say that there is nothing better than your own experiences of failure and success to guide you. After all the apps are only a guide and not a regulation. Seed packets are a start, the vine and books take it further, your own records and joy at the harvest remind you what you did.

I always say my allotment is my gym (well I can fib myself) and any produce I take off the plot is a bonus.

Good luck with the app and enjoy your gardening.

I have a few of the year planner type gardening books and use those as a reference to remind me what I should be doing and when. I also (try to) keep a diary so I can flag up dates where I should be doing things, e.g. when to stop chitting potatoes, when to remove cloches from germinating seeds etc.

An app would be ideal - if only I knew where to start to design one!

The BBC is running a series about robots taking over jobs in the near future
(see: Will a robot take your job? - BBC News )

The prediction for gardeners and landscape gardeners is:

"Likelihood of automation? It's fairly likely (67%)"

So we won't have to worry about Apps, just push a button and have another lager, the robot will sort it all.

And as "Administrators" are 92% likely to be taken over by robots you won't actually even have to push the button, a robot will do that for you too....

                          Hope you like lager!

                            What a horribly bleak outlook

An app is an application Bal - mini-programmes you download for your phone/device.

Personally i prefer books, and I keep a basic one in my shed for quick reference for planting distances, or I can google if it's not in there. Unless you're growing really complicated things (and I can't think of any off-hand), most veg and fruit are fairly straightforward.I keep a diary so can look back through my blog to see what happened when, but that will hugely depend on the weather. Everything this year is about a month late going in and cropping for a lot of things (not all) has also been delayed, so I haven't really used that many of the timings I used last year.
