  • Beans - How do you dry yours

as the title says, How do you dry your beans. I have loads, Borlotti and white which have been shelled and are spread out on a flat tray. Do I let nature take its course or is there a quicker way?

Nah. 2 weeks on a plate/tray with regular shuffling.

If I am using them for seed they also go into a container of dried rice for a further 2 weeks, just to be sure, though that could be overkill.

On a tray in the sun in the car, or in the airing cupboard (which is daft really as we have solar hot water so no sun means a cooler cupboard!!) usually for about two-three weeks.

I'm picking my Borlotti's as they are drying on the plant, then bringing them home and shelling, then leave spread out on shallow dish in sun, then after few weeks into storage jar. Almost all picked now.they do store well, and v good for use over the winter.

            - leave on the plant as long as poss (mine tend to get all picked in the first week of Sept, because the damp nights rot the plants)

            - leave all pods on newspaper somewhere warm and dry (don't shell them yet)
            - when pods are brown & crispy, with no "give", you can shell the beans
            - store in glass, not plastic, with a silica packet if poss

            * unripe beans, ie not brown & crispy, can be stored in the freezer. Not the pods, just the beans
