And if theybruin my veg I may have a falling out with the neigshbours because of thier hooligan children that think every ones garden is thiers grrr. Loads of prime south facing land I can't use because of them :-(

Carrot root fly is often carried in eddies of wind and can be found in hanging baskets, balconies of flats etc....raised beds will be as vulnerable as non raised beds Kirstie

        Oh bum.
I was told on a fb group, repeatedly, that carrot fly isn't a problem if bed or tub is more than a fktt and half high. Someone that does seem to know.most stuff, but does seem to think he knows everything.

Didn't have a problem with them in my big tub, may have to just net everything.

It probably depends on how big a carrot fly problem you have in the area, and also possibly on the year. I grew carrots in an old water butt with great success with no net one year, but when I tried them in a foot high pot the following year they got carrot fly. The next year they were back in the water butt, and guess what - they got carrot fly. So now I grow them in pots under a net and they are fine.

This is the trouble with pests - until you have a problem you think you are ok, and they don't do the same things each year. Last year I had a lovely crop of completely undamaged autumn raspberries. This year more than half are ruined by raspberry beetle damage. Same plants, same position, different year.

I made the mistake and did not net as it is very rare you see a butterfly here. Yesterday i went out to water and over night one of my patches of broccoli has been half eaten. I got about 4 handfuls of caterpillars off 15 plants. I think they will bounce back if i don't get anymore.
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them
