mystery squash question

I have not grown squash before, but I have this plant that self-seeded from home made compost in my garden



The fruit in the picture is the largest on the plant and about 4 inches long. I am assuming that it is a butternut squash and that it is now too late in the year for this to ripen properly and be of any use.

Can anyone tell me if I am correct or not?

It's hard to tell from that photo, PMW. It could be a butternut but it isn't a typical butternut shape. Are all the smaller ones the same shape? Do any of the leaves have white markings? That would be typical of a butternut. If I could see the flowers, or the part where the stem joins to the squash I might have a better idea. Yes probably too late to ripen it for winter storage, whatever it is, but you could try eating it immature like a courgette.

That one looks more like a typical butternut shape.

Looks like a butternut variety,as for ripening,it will carry on doing so once removed from the plant,but only if you get it before the first frost do,

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll just leave in place for the moment and see what happens. I don't think there is any frost forecast here for the next week or so at least.
