  • saving seed from super hot chillies

    Hi all.

Next year I am planning on growing some super hot chillies. I have not done this before.

Specifically I am thinking of maybe the trinidad scorpion and the trinidad moruga scorpion.

My question is - Can I save the seed from these chillies?

Or are these chillies some sort of f1 hybrid, that prevents seed saving?

    THank you!

are you planning to buy plants instead seed packet? if you are growing from seed you will have enough plants, and why to bother about seed saving! I know it is hard stuff of overwintering. enjoy growing and eating the worlds first and second hotest chillis

I don't grow superhots, but I don't think either of them are F1. So same as other chillies, as long as you isolate the flowers & hand-pollinate you should be fine. And lay in a supply of heavy duty latex gloves, disposable chopping boards etc for when you want to open the beggars up.

my LO tasted chilli's from plant including tesco hot chillis when he discovered greenhouse in the garden.

no dare to grow more hot types yet.

        disposable chopping boards

cover the board with clear plastic lid and use the same board with out washing for next curry

Absolutely - whatever kind of disposable thingummies you choose to use. And unless you like superhots, I'd bin it after processing the chillies. I have 50 habaneros to process - whatever is used to process them is being binned after, I can't get the oil out. And I don't want the littlies who are learning to cook in my kitchen to have a nasty surprise, or to worry about it happening.

All chillies grown from seed - I never buy plants.

Ok great, I will just save the seed in my usual manner...

I chop them on my dedicated 'chilli' board.

            THank you

Be careful with the Moruga. It is VERY pungent. You can smell the peppery spice of the pod even before you cut it open. I use it VERY sparingly as it's mostly out of my league. Still like to grow it though.

Chilligrower, besides paper lantern what other chillies if any do you use for hot sauce?
Do you make any other concoctions eg jam, relish etc?

I made my last batch of hot sauce with a combination of scotch bonnets and ring of fire. Nobody else in the house will touch it cos its so hot
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?
                Pumpkin pi.

Good question chilli grower. I was kinda hoping you know the answer to that
I will let you know next year. I'm intending to save some seeds from my black naga ( if there are any). There shouldn't be a problem with cross pollination because it's the only chilli I've grown this year.

I'm going to try growing jay's peach ghost scorpion next year as well

                  I enjoy growing hot chilli's, it's a challenge

I just use a plate that goes into the dishwasher for my Habs and disposable gloves. The thing you need to watch out for is that they are very attractive fruit, peeps will automatically pick them up.

Any variety that is an F1 will have it written on the packet.

philthy - I also make chutney.

But mainly just hot sauce, I like to use paper lanterns as I generally get LOADS of them.

But next year will be scorpion sauce!!!
