      • I had all intentions of planting the monkey nuts today but the weather is so bad I wouldnt venture into my greenhouse.
I will now go with the lunar planting on the 6th.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Well I searched all over for bird peanuts, Mallly, without any luck, only stuff for budgies, until Pidl got in a big stock of wild bird food this week, and amongst it were some mixed packages containing two small bags of peanuts along with fat balls, fat rings and a fat stick. So my birds are getting some nice fatty treats. They might get the peanuts too, because not only are they without shells but they are wrinkled and ancient looking and I doubt very much if they'll germinate.

But then I remembered that I brought some back with me specially for this purpose from a trip to England a year ago, or maybe longer. So I rummaged through my seed stash and found these three batches of raw but de-shelled peanuts. I'm not sure how old they are but they look in much better condition than the bird peanuts.
There are two distinct types here. The photo doesn't show the differences very well, but the ones on the right are larger, paler and more pink in colour. The two batches on the left are both very similar looking smaller redder-skinned peanuts, though they could still be different varieties so I won't mix them together.

And then I found YAAYY!! this bag of actual monkey nuts in their shells

The peanuts inside them are also the small red type. So I have plenty of peanuts and monkey nuts for the challenge, but they are all quite old, so I think the next step is germination testing.

              • Oh yes, I mentioned before that I also have this packet of actual proper peanut seeds. They even have a variety name, Jimmy's Pride. Haven't managed to find out anything about that variety on the internet but I'll keep trying. They're in a German packet so I must've got them when I was in Frankfurt. here are pics of the front and back of the packet.

And here's the part with growing instructions in 5 languages, cropped to make it easier to read, because it might be useful to all you monkey nutters.

The text with the pictorial instructions says, roughly translated, sow indoors, germination temp over 25C, germination time 14 to 30 days, seed depth 1cm, plant in a sunny location, plant spacing 50cm, harvest Aug-Sept.

Probably a variety originally raised by well known late peanut farmer and ex US President Jimmy Carter.

                      • Sowed more peanuts today into 3" pots and put them in my new Geopod. I sowed some awhile ago, which I put under a growlight in the workshop - and they came up ok, but unfortunately my step nephew (who stays a few nights each week) decided to do skipping in the workshop instead of going for a run one night - with a predictable outcome

                        • From Snadger's post a few pages back, relating to the speed of germination..... are we jumping the gun a bit by planting sowing these so early ?

It's probably another 5 months away (probably longer) before we can comfortably plant these outside. Is this a purely greenhouse/polytunnel project ?

                            • It's up to you Kevin, plus it depends where you live. Obviously the further south you are, the more chance you have with early sowings. It will also help if you have somewhere frost free to keep the plants until they get transplanted.

                              • Kevin, plant them anyway and keep them indoors somewhere warm until the weather gets warmer.
