  • Well, I've cheated! Just been to Tesco's, bought a big bag of monkey nuts. On to allotment, planted 32 Monkey nuts into modules. Back home, all in propagator. Its about now I find out whether it still works.
No time New years day or day after cos I'm working!

Not sure whether this is the norm but each shell had two nuts in it? I used two small trays of 8 modules and I sowed two nuts in each. If I get half of these germinating, i'll be happy!

No, big fella, I took em out of the shells completely and planted them. I thought the roots had enough to do without trying to get out of a shell. Pointy end down is the way to go............or so I've read!

              • Well i cannot find raw nuts in the shell anywhere, last try is the health food store but won´t be going for a while. But i did get some raw shelled ones, so i will try them but i am doubtful
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

                • Eight days later and they are up. Instead of the roots going down the nuts have forced themselves above ground balanced on a root. The two sides of the nut form the cotyledons similar to a runner bean plant methinks
I wish i had used bigger pots now as the nuts have swelled and two to a module will not give them enough nutrients. Once they are established a bit more i'll have to pot them on to bigger pots...............probably next week!

From this then - what would be the best way to sow these ?

Sorry, for expecting you to be the 'guinea pig' Snadger

If I had them to do again I would go for individual pots rather than modules. Put two nuts to a 3" pot (plastic cuo?) and ditch one if both germinate. This way they would have enough nutrients for a while and could be gradually potted into bigger pots. Starting in modules means a very quick transplant into a 3" or 4 " pot.

                        • I was considering paper pots - but going with the speed of germination, then plastic seems the best way.
