I want to try growing artichokes and I've read you don't always get good quality plants from seed. And since the plants grow huge I don't want to waste space growing plants that won't produce well.

However, most of the companies I've managed to find who sell plants don't make it clear whether they're seed grown or vegetatively propagated.

Can anyone recommend a good source?

I've bought from here in the past, with good results....

Still probably grown from seed but any rogue seedlings will have been removed at potting up stage.

I thought the issue with plants from seed is that they won't necessarily produce good quality chokes? If so it wouldn't be obvious at seedling stage?

If you know someone with a good plant, ask them for a sideshoot.

Spent ages on Google. All plants appear to be seed raised.
I suppose unless you are lucky enough to get a side shoot it's going to be a slog.
Maybe it's the wrong time of year. There's a very interesting article at Artichokes - a world of flavour - Telegraph

Will try from seed next year.

The weedy ones have spikier foliage, so you should be able to tell the difference quite early on....
