Foxes and Moles

Hi everyone, I've just joined and enjoying reading the various posts, I wanted to mention that I'm a professional mole catcher as well as being licensed by the Police for the purpose of fox control.

Hi veggiechicken we are lucky enough to rent a sizable piece of land for our horses but also have a flower garden there as well as growing vegetables

I feed four foxes and a feral cat at my home but I do kill moles humanely with traps if they become invasive. I was taught by a gamekeeper how to set mole traps. He also used strychnine poison which I didn't want anything to do with TBH.

I've just purchased a book called Moles and Their Control by Guy N. Smith just to give me a bit of background information.

Hi Snadger ironically I do like foxes and would never shoot one for the sake of it we have a few around the land but they don't really cause us any problems to be honest, that said there is an ugly side to foxes and sometimes there isn't an option but to get rid of the offender.

Let me know how your getting on with the moles

Yep, I don't really mind foxes -there is a sort of 'gallusness' about them, which I quite admire.

They don't really cause us any problems and keep the rabbits in check - however, when your confronted with the remnants of a caught rabbit on your plot, it's not a pretty sight.

Sorry, I forgot to add - I've never ever seen a mole before, I don't think.

Apparently, there are no moles in Ireland (according to QI).

I've caught what I call aquatic moles! I've set the trap in a run that has been flooded overnight then a couple of days later dug out a trapped mole that was under water!
It must have been free diving as I found no snorkel!

I think it's something to do with what was resident there immediatly before the land mass was seperated away by the Irish sea

No moles over here, the ground is far too dry, i can hardly dig through it

There are quite a few foxes, my chickens have a very large fenced off area that we dug a foot into the ground and is about 5 foot tall, i do not lock them up at night and always scared that i might find a massacre one day but it has nearly been 3 years. I am thinking with having so many dogs around that the smells put the foxes off from our land.
It is very known that they can kill your cats, but i have not had a problem.
