calling all chilli heads ! hi all ,has anybody started there seeds yet ? and how is the overwintering going ?

4 overwintering and they are all looking brill! I'm going to start a few off early (for me!) ive not grow lights but I'm going to try a couple in the Christmas break.

great stuff ,good luck i have got 9 that im trying to over winter 2 look dead but the rest seem ok and 5 have new leaf growth on them is that normal ?

Mine also have new leaf growth. I'm leaving them as the weather is quite warm. One of my best overwintering plants was a habanero and it really never stopped. It carried on fruiting through Christmas for two years running before I eventually had to retire because it was taking over the house. Just be on the look out for aphids and kill asap. They love the sappy new growth of plants. Stop them as they start or you will never get rid of them.

I have planted on the 23rd of November some Jalapeño and cayenne, they have mostly popped up and doing really well going to leave next to a window which might make them a little leggy whilst we are away but thats why i sowed those have so many spare seeds. All my other varieties (the expensive ones with a few seeds to a pack) will get done after my little weekend break or early new year.
I do not know why i am planting any as i have enough dried and frozen chilli´s to last a lifetime

Lisa, my family don't like chillies in anything! I use them for myself and for making gifts,mor in chutneys etc. I can't not grow chillies

My overwintering took a surprising turn. Trimmed them back and they looked healthy in the greenhouse, then I brought them into the kitchen and all the leaves fell off within 24 hours. What do we think? Dead, or just a little shocked?

Well it could be either but it's worth keeping them. A few years back I had a similar thing happen to me and I chucked on my compost heap. It was a mild winter but come spring I noticed some new green leaves, potted it on and it came lovely. I find lemon drops and Habs stay green. My scotch bonnets last year all dropped their leaves as did my manzano and were nothing more than sticks for some time.

I have never grown Chillis before but next year will be my first year as i got some seeds off Lisabolt which I will be trying. So i will be asking plenty of questions come the spring when i sow them for the first time.

As for over wintering chilli's, like is aid i don'y have any but my sweet bell pepper plant is still growing and still has all it's leaves on. I pruned it right back and it started shooting new little leaves and all the leaves that were still on when i pruned it are still on now. One of two of them are looking a bit grim but they are still there. Hopefully it can make it through the winter.

I would get a start before spring, January is a great time if you can give the space to them. Good luck

January it is then. It doesn't take much encouragement to get me sowing. I was going to hold off until February with everything but I'll sow the chillies in a months time. Thanks Lisa.
