  • Soil temperature for sowing.

Just installed a soil temperature "spike" in my raised bed.
It radios the soil and air temp to my PC every minute.
In spring what temp should the soil be for sowing ?
    Thanks
    Jimmy

Unless it's really delicate stuff like Q's, peppers and beans etc I think it should be about 5 degrees.

Please don't qoute me of this though as it might well be wrong.

I try and help the soil along a bit by putting a bit of black plastic on top at the end of Dec.
I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. Thomas A. Edison

Sow seeds when the soil is warm enough to sit on with a bare bottom - or test with your elbow

I was hoping that my temperature sensor would preclude me from inserting various bodily appendages into cold damp soil.

Now you don´t need to share all of your top secrets
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

In that case the RHS say that it needs to be above 7C https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/beginn...ing-techniques

you will have a good idea when to get going when you see weeds start to germinate

And here's another chart to compare with...

                  Germination

Thing is, with a mild Spring the soil temp can arrive 'early' and then you get a cold snap which spoils everything!
