Just wondered if this crazy mild weather is luring anyone into it's trap by trying to get ahead with their sowing................it is so, so tempting but must sit on my hands a little longer..............

I have to say I have been thinking about it , but the fact that we have had so many grey days is the only thing that put me off.

And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,

No, too much other stuff to do
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I was sowing some seeds today and aubergine, peppers and tomatoes were screaming at me, and if my neck was not really aching from leaning over seed trays i would have planted some.I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

You see it does not get dark till 6:15/6:30 here so so so tempting, but we had a cold beg of March this year so would not know what to do with massive plants everywhere and bringing them in and out is a big chore with so manyI grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

The only thing I am tempted to try is a bucket of Meteor peas after the success with Geisha in a bucket last summer. I might start them off in the house and plant them out in my friend's greenhouse at about the 6 inch stage. If the weather turns really cold I could always swop to plan b and eat them as pea shoots!
I think there is a real danger of being fooled into doing things too early this winter. The weather models, working on the basis of the strong El Nino, have consistently predicted a warm, wet and windy December, a transition to colder weather in January and a cold February, March and possibly April. Long range forecasting is a guessing game at best, but they got December spot on from as far back as August. Nobody (with any sense) is suggesting anything unusually cold, but I think it is fairly unlikely that the winter will continue to be as far above average as this - its currently about 4 degrees over and we are heading for the warmest December on record.
By "it" I mean the Central England Temperature averaged for the whole of December so far. Current temperatures are more like 10 degrees above where they "should " be with a real possibility that the individual record for 19th December will be beaten today.Last edited by Penellype; 19-12-2015, 09:33 AM.A life is like a garden. In Torquay and close to the coast I rarely get frost, but last year it stayed cold right into May with night temps consistently below 10 degrees. So i am sitting tight, no plants do their best if given a rough start.
Low temperatures are only half the problem, light levels are the other.photo album of my garden in my profile http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...my+garden.html

I was buying fish food yesterday (bloodworm my clown loach love them) at wyeva1e & happened to walk past the garlic aisle outside. So I got some Iberian Wight & Lautrec Wight to plant out. Not starting any seeds till jan/feb. It probably will be cold in March/April again? I need to plan where everything will go next year (sounds ages away) & make lists of seed potatoes & seeds to get.Location : Essex

To be honest I don't think it matters that much. if it did then no plants would grow from seed in the wild.
Obviously we would not put very tender seeds (that cost more than 10 pence each) and we would all talk to our plants (indoors/in the shed/or in the greenhouse) for company . If they do fail then we would just sow more.
If you can get on the ground without damaging it then you can try what you want. Most seeds come in mounts that we will never use in one year so give them a go.
who knows we might have a brilliant spring with no snow and no frost but plenty of rain overnight and sunshine during the day.
