I grew radishes in my 'old' beds before I moved, without even thinking about them ~ sowed and left 'em to get on with it. Ignored, and when I needed the space where they were growing, pulled 'em up and, hey-presto - perfectly formed radishes .....

New beds, soil and compost. Radishes sown ~ watered, waited and nowt.....! Eaten away tops and spindly roots ~ even the ones sown into pots: why???

Any of my summer ones that survived the birds were eaten by slugs - a whole bed. The winter ones as a bigger veg seem to withstand slug attack better. Have a v good germination rate so need to thin - wondering if they can be transplanted???

Well another year, another pathetic crop. Sowed various seeds from different packets to the required depth early spring. This is the result. Thin, whispy things.

Mine too Marb. Gone straight from thin wispy things to shooting up a flower stalk. And then pollen beetles scoffed the flowers so there won't be any seed pods to eat either.

I don't care what anyone says, radish are the hardest thing to grow, not the easiest.

Same here! I've never understood why they suggest that growing radish is a good crop for children to grow. I'm a very big kid, but I can't grow them!!

I gave up trying to grow them years ago.

                          We've done alright this year.

Our first crop this year, I did in the ground, and we got some OK radishes. They are flowering now.

Second crop, sowed 3rd June, in long trough pot, copper tape around it, are the best we have ever sown. It was a Rainbow mix and french breakfast.

Well again all the strips of radish I sowed under a plastic cloche a couple of weeks ago have hardly come up, mostly again nibbled off by slugs even though the heavy cloche is protecting them. I just give up as its just impossible to grow the seemingly most simple veg.

Could they be sowed on the windowsill indoors until so big,by watering seeds it must attract slugs from underground etc they grow well in pots on a table of some sort outside away from the slugs, flea beetles can devastate them too.

I agree that Radish are difficult to grow - certainly not the easy veg that kids are supposed to start with. There must be some evil minded people around if they suggest giving children radishes to grow. Put them off gardening for life!

I don't have much luck with radish either - there's seems to be a 10 minute window between leaves growing and roots turning woody and inedible - nevermind all the holes in the leaves and the roots.
I actually decided that I don't like radish and have no wish to grow them. In fact I detest them. Then I throw the seeds on the ground and ignore them. That way they grow just to spite me!!

                                Try it Marb.
