  • Well today was seed sorting! Flowers this time! Having abandoned em this last few years!

Yeah I have a few in mind, trying to "Up the Aunty" this year

VC! I know I did pm you last year regarding seeds, but to be honest! It's been a bit of a crazy one this year!
Gunna select the few I need, n bin the rest, but if you want em for the VSP "Shout out"

Not all but most are within sowing dates, but to be honest, I take that on a whim!

      • My seed potatoes and some onion sets arrived on Thursday. So, potatoes have been put to chit. Some onion sets planted in modules and in the greenhouse. Some radish and salad leaves planted in those plastic cartons you get fruit in from supermarkets, they are in the conservatory. Feeling the horticultural 'pull'. It is 16.49 and not dark yet. Yay!

                • Spend the day on the plot with a pal: chatting, drinking tea, and pulling up layer upon layer of carpet and weed suppressing membrane (which, of course, have an entire forest of weeds and brambles growing through them). Lovely weather and felt very productive.

                  • Dint do much today as it was a bit nippy, however I managed to put up 2 arches over the fence gates in preparation of the Zephirine Drouhin which will be planted soon.

                    • Surprised myself with what I actually got done, continued with the reclamation of the tree, rubble bank to one side of my plot.

Being about 3' above the natural soil level it has drained well. Dug over about a third and discovered enough bricks and glass to build and glaze a house.

Got to visit the MiL tomorrow so will have to continue in the week, weather permitting of course.

I'll have to have a root through my plastic tub of seed packets and sort some out to send to you as there's a few I have that I'm not interested in growing....the Ageratum on the cover of this week's Garden News for one....never been my favourite type of flower

I was at the Alnwick Garden Club on Tuesday night and the chairman Tom brought in a plastic bag FULL of packets of seeds as he'd had a tidy out. Told us to just help ourselves at the end of the night I got some Flyaway Carrot seeds which I had only just been looking at in Wilko earlier that same day (so saved £2.35), some Naughty Marietta French Marigold, an heirloom variety of Tomato called The Amateur and some viola seeds.

There was also a rather nice white Lilac up for grabs but the treasurer snaffled that before I could get my hot mitts on it

That'll be me in a few weeks as I quite fancy an archway over the allotment gate with roses and clematis and possibly a honeysuckle

                              • Productive day today. Picked up some local ebay purchases first then did a bit of shopping for OH. Headed straight for allotment after that. Chooks seem to have settled in well although the "Quiet" cockerel appears to have found his voice.

Potted on some show type leeks that i have grown from grass from 2 1/2 " pots to 4" pots. As both were square pots i found the best way was to replant them in the larger pots by moving the rootball 90 degrees creating four corners which were filled and easy to get my fingers in to firm the compost. Pleased with these leeks which are 3/8" diameter with about 3" of white. They have had no heat so it will be interesting to see if they grow ok or just run to seed?
Because my propagator is now empty I sowed a 4" pot each of, Cape Gooseberry,Giant Prague Celariac, Calabrese and Ailsa Craig tomatoes. I also brought home two of my named chrysanthemum stools which were looking a bit sick to give them a little bit of heat on the window sill. These will hopefully throw up cutting material like the others I have.
Knocked in some raised bed supports before setting boards in the middle of my polytunnel to form a path. Because I would rather have growing space as path width, the path is only about 18" wide.
I then helped one of the plotholders catch three of the chickens that were being given away from one of the plotholders. I wouldn't help him carry them though, after having to put all my clothes in the wash after catching some for myself, the other day.
