  • Done hardly anything lately, been laid up for a month with vertigo. Managed a couple of hours at the plot on sunday, cleared a load of beds of gone-over stuff & had a bonfire. Its sad having to put the plot to bed!

    • Youngest Daughter did some pumpkin carving with her young cousin today, so I took the innards and the outers where removed down to the daleks on plot 23B and whilst there I topped up three Daleks with a layer of comfrey from Comfrey Bed 1 and a layer of mature horse muck and sawdust from last year.

Melted some holes in vending machine cups for the next batch of sowings. See Alans Allotment: Melting Holes

      • Today I planted out 70 seedlings of overwintering onion "Augusta". I sowed these at the end of August and they've grown very strongly. Hopefully I can keep the slugs off!

Also I tidied up the summer raspberries, cutting out all the fruited stems and all the weakest new stems, and forking out as much bindweed as I could. Oh, and I lifted a bed of Desiree potatoes. Not very big because the blight took out the foliage too early, but they are perfectly usable and there's no sign of slug damage. Only two more beds of potatoes to lift now!

I didn't get married yesterday btw, I was just responding to NG's post!

This morning I gave brassica bed two a going over - weeded, staked some plants, top dressed with wood ash, and re-netted. Picked some beetroot, carrots, kale and tomatoes for tea tonight.

                        • Most of the day was tied up measuring out & marking the new pond cage area, sourcing & ordering materials for it. A bit of hedge trimming was done so I felt I had done something constructive with my time..................

                          • Had a Very good day. Got the back & sides on the new shed. Did a bit more of the floor. Also dug out a some turf out from in front of my existing shed. Levelled it a bit covered with weed fabric, layed 3 big bits of play ground matting ( seriously thick rubber mat ). So I've finally got somewhere level for my two Legged table . Unfortunately lack of light stopped play.

                            • Today I stayed away from the allotment while the men were fitting new double glazing to the front of the house. I entertained myself by reading all those brilliant entries in the VVS and by updating my blog for the first time in six months.

                              • Big day at the allotment - it was the sites pumpkin competition prize day. There were 8 entries, all the competitors wheeling their pumpkins up the plot to the front gates there was a wheelbarrow convoy going on.

I took my luggage scales and a blue ikea bag down as these would be easier than balancing them on the bathroom scales.

Everyone standing watching the weigh in - both plot holders and their families. Somehow I ended up having to lift and weigh them all.

I came in fourth which means that I got my entry fee back. I've just finished the last bag of pumpkin puree from last year so I should now have enough to last till next Halloween.

Difference between fourth and fifth place

Nice start to the day with all the plot holders standing round chatting.

After that picked some beetroot, kale and peppers.

Next week is the start of burning season so I emptied out the coregated iron trough fire pit (about 8ft x 4ft x2ft) as it was full of wood so that I can make sure there are no hedgehogs hiding in it. Whilst I was at it I moved it a couple of feet further from the fence and shed.
