Done nothing lately, not even picked up a copy of my gardening mag! The last thing I managed was a quick tidy up, and putting in some garlic and a couple of lines of daffodils along the edges of my raspberry bed. Going to try and get over there for an hour or so this week i think.

Busy weekend what with gigging Friday night until the wee small hours. Painting mothers bungalow all day saturday and finishing Sunday morning, so plot time severly restricted.
Got there Sunday about 2.15pm and planted 150 onion sets (red and white) then returned to the 'hard' patch and carried on double digging. It was slightly easier after the recent rains but getting the fork down the second depth still maked the handle creak and occasionally bends a tine! Anyway some pig muck and soil improver gets stirred at depth before burying half composted seasonal rubbish and cardboard with some more well rotted pig muck plus a handful of autumn leaves. It was getting dark about and hour or so later when I realised I'd had no lunch and the lowering light gave me cause to retire for the day.
Grabbed some curley Kale for tea and headed home.

Harvested my leeks today (not very big but enough to make 1 leek pudding) and spread some horse manure over about a 3rd of my garden (found a few small spuds whilst digging). I'll spread the rest once i get the couple of swedes I have still in the garden out. Oh and the parsnips, once all of them are out I'll get some manure on that bit too.

I always believe things will come in handy if you keep them long enough....................so as I was fed up of seeing this old table lying around, I decided to turn it into a hardening off table so it will be used between greenhouse & planting out on the plot. 20mm holes were drilled in the table top, 20mm conduit fed through the holes and pushed onto 15 pipe which was hammered into the ground, covered with some old polythene & can now house 6 full size seed trays.

Got rid of the last tomato plant in my garden today & a few petunias & dahlias. There's still some dahlias out there & a purple tower petunia is trying hard to survive the cold. French marigolds, geraniums & nasturtium ok still. I removed some shrub branches thats growing behind my flowering currant,I don't know why the plants there,I need to properly remove it but I can't get in there,as long as I keep cutting it right back it won't root too much I'm hoping,I don't want it to affect the flowering currant I'l have to keep an eye on it. Had a look at my late peas they're not fattening up much, they might have stopped growing? My Brussels sprouts are ready to start harvesting in a minute, some are old looking so I'l take some lower ones off first & let the ones at the top of carry on because they're tiny,I'l try to remember to feed them after I do that. My brocolli are huge & are looking more leafy at the moment like something might happen,I wonder if I'l get brocolli from them or if they'l always be leaves?Location : Essex

Today I had some wood coming to rebuild the beds in the New Territories. I wasn't given a delivery slot, just some time today however last time I had some delivered it arrived at the plot before I did so this morning I was down the plot by Quarter to 8.
Whilst waiting for the delivery I dug up a large gooseberry bush that wasn't producing (and also happened to be where I was going to but the first bed) and the lupin next to it, moved some wood out the way, started another fire and moved firewood from around the plot to the wood pile.
At 12:15 I had a call from the delivery driver asking for directions. He wasn't far away and it would have taken him probably 15min max to get there so I had a cupper and went up to main road as he was going to give me a call when he was nearer. No call. Went back to the plot and done a bit of weeding, 1pm still no call. 1:15 no call – he wasn't answering his phone either. 2pm no call and the office phone was just ringing.
But this time I was tearing up railway sleepers for the fire with my bare hands (OK, sounds good but to be honest, if they had any substance to them I wouldn't be burning them would I). I knocked over the side to the firepit when I was loading in a fence gate and gatepost so had to rebuild that – it seemed to be easier to build with a fire blazing inside of it than the first time when it was empty, maybe I was a tad more focused for some reason.
Eventually at quarter to three I get the call asking for more directions. He was about 50 yards on from where he called the last time.
On the plus side he actually drove all the way down to the plot rather than piling the wood halfway down the access road as the previous driver had. He also gave me a hand carrying the 14' planks onto the plot. Apparently in between the first call and the second call he had to dash off to a funeral and had asked the office to call me – which they hadn't.
Fire had died down by then so I picked some raspberries and went home.
Tomorrow I'll start on the first bed.
