  • I should have posted a couple of pictures - I think they help bring the stories to life...

    The central bed..

    - tidy or what

The potting bench - a testament on how things stay upright despite the odds

This bed I'm thinking of having for herbs only - I can fleece it if necessary for double protection.

      • Dug out old compost and replaced with new for my beans later on in the year.

Dug out the old apple tree stump to clear space for a new raised bed.

              • I cut back my tomatoes right back in preparation for using the bed for something else. I put one cutting in a pot and will take a couple more over the next week or two.

Put some very old leek seeds in after I realised I'd forgotten to order any leek seeds with the stuff that's arriving this week. I don't expect any to germinate, but it's costing me a tiny amount of growing medium and window sill space to see what happens.

Planted cucumber seeds. This is a bit of a hail Mary. Autumn weather can go either way here. The cucumbers I planted in spring/summer last year performed very poorly due to extreme weather fluctuations so I'd like to see whether I can get a plant to produce a few before the weather drops under 20 C. I also have zucchini and button squash in the ground (well in tubs, at least).

Some winter greens seedlings are coming along nicely. Perpetual spinach and something else. The marker fell out of the starter tray so I don't know whether the "something else" is silverbeet, pak choy or English spinach.

Gem lettuce and salad bowl lettuce seedlings toddling along nicely at the moment but I am a destroyer of lettuce plants. The gem is an experiment. I want to see whether I can grow it on my kitchen counter as I use lettuce mostly in summer and I've never been able to get it to survive the heat outside.

I planted a whimsical bucket of potatoes this morning for no other reason than I love the idea. It's totally the wrong time to be planting them with a heat wave happening this week, but there was a red potato sitting in the cupboard which had started sprouting so why not?

My only "serious" planting this week has been 30 baby pak carrot seeds in a 15 x 5 inch container. They're currently sitting under cover on my dining table and resisting the temptation to check them every day will be a challenge.

Lolie, I'm going to take a stab in the dark here and guess you're not nearby...

Sounds like you have a lot to keep you busy!

I'm in Sydney and we're expecting 5 days straight of temperatures around 40 C. Way too hot to be starting winter stuff but also way too late to be planting summer stuff.

I'll put my location in my profile as soon as I can get access to it. I messaged an admin about it.

Welcome to the forum! Think you need ten posts before the location option is activated - it did for me anyway.

                      • Very pleasant couple of hours on the plot today....positively tropical at 11c in the sun and 26c in the greenhouse!

Moved chitting potatoes from greenhouse to polytunnel (I need the space!).

Potted up six slightly pot-bound strawberries.

Moved five Pink Fizz fuchsias from tunnel into greenhouse. Will put them into bigger pots tomorrow. Also need to google whether to cut them down or not.

Marked out roughly (very roughly!) where I want the six veggie beds to be using last year's raised bed frames and other bits of random wood on the plot to get a general idea of size and placement.

Tickled a patch of soil with a fork to see what condition it's in and it's looking good! May give the centre section a dig over and remove the weeds I didn't get a chance to in November once the monsoon season arrived! Off work this week so looking forward to getting loads done.

                        • Bought a GH base for a fiver to make an edged bed
Barrowed some woodchip down the garden and topped up some paths
Opened a bag of JM compost and filled 4 flower buckets ready for carrot sowing. It went further than I expected.
Potted on some tomato seedlings. Window sills will be filling up soon

                            • Bought that £25 plastic greenhouse from wilkos.
Ummmed and arred about where to put it.
The polytunnel thoughts continue - do I get one cheap from ebay? Would it just blow away...how the hell would I secure?

Bought some kestrel and anya seed pots on my trip to Wilkos..to add to the other various that are already chitting 😝

                              • The plan was to plan out all the early seed potatoes, i managed 1 in 1 pot, how rubbish am i...do not answer...
potted up 10 tomato plants, they have been very badly treated but have some really thick stems, you never know.
got a couple of tubs filled ready for me carrots
and weeded the onions, accidentally pulled out 3 onions but have tried to re plant them.
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them
