  • Bought a cordless strimmer to tackle the huge clumps of grass and ivy on the plot. Was going to put a membrane down to create a path, but someones snaffled all the free wood chippings that were in a very convienient pile outside my allotment gate. Oh well, hopefully there will be another delivery soon!
Also dismantled all the rotten wood from the strawberry bed, and weeded said strawberry bed. Will try and dig the straberries up soon to put another raised bed in in its place.
Also dug up some raspberry canes, what a pig they were! All in all, a productive couple of hours.

    • At home, started hardening off greenhouse autumn-sown broad beans. At allotment, did some more digging, incorporated a bit of blood fish and bone and a bit of unused compost from last year then covered it up again with soil (have to see if foxes dig in it or not). Moved some more strawberries while digging the weed infested strawberry bed - they are going over to where the rhubarb is located as I can plan for a better veg rotation if the fruit is together. Pruned a bit more off the height of bay bush at edge of plot.

      • Made a large temporary unheated propagator using my 6ft cloche and a 6ft length of black weed suppressant. Set it up on the staging in my polytunnel. Then pricked out 51 red drumhead cabbage, 43 AYR cauliflower & 20 evita cauliflower. Then put them in the new big propagator.

        • More burning of sodden wet timber on my project plot after work. Managed to catch the guy who dumps the hoss muck on site and asked him to dump some right in front of my plot at the end of the track. The woman who has a plot at the other end of the site has complained to me that she has to climb through a large pile of steaming hoss muck in front of her gate, so me seeing him will benefit both of us!

          • Spent most of the day erecting & stabilising another greenhouse frame. That's another 8 foot added to the munty frame, only one more GH to go......................was just clearing away, thinking about chillaxing for the evening when the boys turned up with a couple of tons of chippings..............Erm, I wonder what I'll be doing tomorrow.................

            • Just been and given my new cordless strimmer (£29 from homebase) a whirl. Wasnt expecting much for the price, but its actually not bad! The near end of the plot looks much neater now.

                • Mine is scheduled to look like that tomorrow, Jonny

Today (17 degrees ) weeded the garlic, plus the asparagus, artichoke and strawberry beds.
                  Sowed beetroot & sweet peas.
Started the first round of cutting the edges of the grass paths between the beds. There are 165m of edges and they need doing about once a fortnight March-October.

                  • On my god, we have had a lovely day in the south today, even the greenhouse auto roof vent was open.

                    • Prepped the bed and planted out the elephant garlic, they've all rooted well, soils a bit cold but we'll be fine.
Also dug up and split some volunteer garlic and replanted the best ones.
...and finally posted some seeds to VC!

                      • Lovely sunny day here today so I got the weeds out of two of my beds, both earmarked for potatoes in a few weeks.

I managed to break a prong off my stainless steel digging fork in the process, but a new one from Amazon arrives tomorrow

                          • Eventually getting my patio door fixed tomorra so I can get in and out into the garden rather than having to walk all the way around. Weather looks like it's going to get mild next week so I might stick the 2 growhouses up.

                            • I dug out a section of grass today & made a new bed it's just over 12 x 4 foot. I've covered it with cardboard & sticks etc to hopefully keep my cat off of there!

                              • Apart from my lengthy post as demolition man at the allotment, I also had some hoss muck dumped near to my allotment gate and wheelbarrowed some onto the plot.
