  • Productive day today! Went to the allotment with the idea of an easy day nursing my aches and pains and sowing a few seeds.
Decided that the only way the guy who delivers the hoss muck could pile anymore at my project akllotment was if i shifted what was there. Ten barrow loads later it was on my plot and ready for a new delivery!
Decided to see how easy it would be to get the glass panes out of one of the huts before I demolished it. I took the screws out that was holding two panes in and removed most of the silicone which was glueing it in. After a struggle I managed to get two panes out intact and kick out another pane that was cracked. Took out the sodden armchair from inside the hut then locked the gate and went to do what I originally came to the plots for in the first place!

All my seed tatties were firstly spread out in egg cartons on the greenhouse bench.

Sowed four lots of tomatoes and three lots of peppers ready to go into the propagator. I have 40 booklets to send out to plotholders so got rid of about 10 to plotholders on site which will save on postage.

        • Forgot that I'd also sown Evesham Brussel spouts and white cabbage in pots in the greenhouse. I have two lots of All Year Round Caulis, one about 2 inches high which were sown in a propagator and forgot about, and a later sowing just left in the greenhouse which have just germinated.

This is my definition of heaven...tranquility...perfection...call it what you will but I have never felt more at peace with life than when I'm on my allotment

            • Managed to pull a muscle in my side using a maddock on some scutch (couch) grass. It's more funny sore than painful sore - but it will still take a week or so to heal.

Haha I read that as 'so got rid of about 10 plotholders on site' - a bit extreme to save a couple of quid!

                • Looked at my calendar and weather forecast to see if I can find a probably day to get on the plot where time and manageable weather meet.

                  Possibly in March. Maybe.

                  Grrr.

                  • I spent the whole weekend collecting up materials to sheet mulch the new half plot I've taken on - currently the soil's in very bad shape, poorly drained and covered in couch grass, buttercup, dock and mare's tail.

I managed to pick up a builder's bag full of woodchip (free), 10 massive cardboard boxes from the bike shop, 6 bags of kelp from the beach, and 3 bales of straw. Leafmould is available on the plot, so the main expense will be some kind of manure.

I also started clearing and digging over the first section, removing all the nasty weeds and roots (as well as plastic bags and bricks) in preparation for the mulch going down. I'm thinking though that I'm going to have to put in some French drains to address the drainage situation before I can cover it.

I've got plans to turn this area into an 'eco' plot, with only perennial veg, fruit, flowers, a 'bug hotel' and a wildlife pond, as well as a decked/turfed area for relaxing.
                    He-Pep!

I know this feeling - my next weekend off is in April so I'm stuck with as much as I can get done in about 30 mins on the mornings I don't have anything else to do.

At the weekend I cut back my autumn raspberries and fed all of my fruit trees and plants
Put my first two first earlies into pots to start them off - trying to successionally sow them over the next few weeks
Sowed parsnips, carrots and beetroot into pots
                          Planted out my broad beans
                          Dug over the compost heap
Cut back the climbers that are too deeply entrenched to just dig out
Gave the garage a bit of a tidy

                          • Sowed some PSB and celery. Pricked out and transplanted tomatoes Dancing with Smurfs and Black Russian. Pruned the hydrangea. Transplanted some summer bedding and found a nook for my new Bay tree. Snipped the dead wood from the new growth of mint. Weeded just a little. Cleared some rubbish out of the stayput and generally enjoyed the sunshine. Blooming cold though

Weeded the fruit bed and marked the edges so I knew where to stop.
                              Sowed some tomato seeds indoors

                              Today
Received more seeds in the post, so excited about the growing season ahead.
Still to do: Sow Sweet Peppers and more Tomatoes

                              • Today I stared at my pot of carrot seeds willing them to grow. It didn't work.

Then I potted on some Chrysanthemum and Osteospermum cuttings (not vegetables I know but there isn't a "what I did today" thread in the Flower Mill).
