  • What a miserable, drizzly day it is today. Can't see anything getting done today. Might chop a few logs in the garage but that'll be it.

    • Dug up & got rid of my old strawberry plants that have been in the same small bed for about 6 years, some were old plants & produced nothing edible. Some plants were great last year but I also had sawfly so I just decided the patch has to be free of strawberries this year,I'm happy though because I made the bed bigger. Had to move a few snowdrops that were in my way but I split them whilst doing so & put them around the chaenomeles I planted in the border, between a buddeia & jasmine. Also planted two gooseberries along my east facing fence. I've covered my empty beds with bits of branches that I've pruned off my shrubs to make it difficult for my cat to mess there, they love newly dug areas,it works but it looks messy. Tomatoes, sweet peppers & French marigolds have germinated indoors, they're about an inch tall. My basil cuttings have survived me transplanting them into pots from water,I've got nine new plants from two overwintered plants in the kitchen the overwintered ones need repotting.

      • Noticed a very strange gnarly looking weed growing out of my freshly dug soon to be asparagus patch, on closer investigation I discovered it was two chicken feet poking up out of the soil! Dug up a poor headless hen that the foxes were obviously saving for later

I've had that happen to me. Its quite heartbreaking when you realise its one of your own hens!
Not the foxes fault though, I left the gate open by mistake!

          • More axe-ing, use of the screwdriver (NOT what I typed first!) bowsaw-ing and once again, a whopping big bonfire.Undecided whether the project plot looks better or worse though?:

Managed to move another two humungus panes of glass without breaking them. Three more to shift but I decided I'd done enough for one evening as they are just on the limit of what I can lift..

I'm starting to plan and look forward to building something rather than demolish, burn, demolish, burn ad infinitum!

            • Sowed a tub of sweet peas 'skylark mixed' and some calendula 'sunset buff', I think the orange and blue will look good together.

I love this thread. It's very motivational, and helpful to see what other, more experienced growers are doing so I don't end up getting too excited and sowing something too early like I did with the cosmos I've been desperately trying to stop getting leggy since February. (This sunny patch recently helps)

Patience is a very hard lesson to learn.
Forgive me for my pages of text.

              • The weather is a bit milder at the moment so I put some of the seedlings outside for some sun. They're getting a bit leggy inside. Lots of butterflies and other insects around at the moment so I kept them under net.

Placed yet another seed order. Will probably be the last. Only a couple more things I want to get for winter planting and they're harder to obtain.

                • This morning I found that two of my Galina toms had germinated, so it was out of the prop with them and under the growlights - which means two of my chillis have been relegated to the window sill... I think the toms' needs are greater right now.
Then at the plot I dug out ANOTHER barrow load of leaf mould and dug it into my new bed, pulling yet more spaghetti out of the soil that i've already been over once!
Now my shoulder aches - forking hard into a hidden brick in the leaf mould pile didn't help.

                    • The seed fairy has finally prodded me up the you know what to do something so......
Radish (Frech Brekkie), Komatsuna, Spinach (parantage unknown), Chinese Cabbage (Michihilli), Spring Onions (White Lisbon), Beetroot (Boltardy & Rainbow), Turnip (Primera) and Carrots (Nantes 5) all in.

Phew time for a cuppa me thinks.

                      • Popped over the allotment in my lunch hour and painted all my raised beds so they match. Really pleased with the colour, Misty Meadow from homebase, as sort of bluey-green. Not bad for a fiver a tin, once id given it a good stir.

                        • Potted on most of my tomatoes today. Some didn't germinate so I've re-sowed them and I'm now just waiting for them.

Had a bit potter on in the growhouse doing nothing really.
