    • Planted potatoes - haven't bothered for the last few years apart from a few in bags, but giving it another go. There was more work involved than I thought, so will probably have backache in the morning. Transplanted broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower into builders buckets. I'm growing them on a bit until they're big enough to have a fighting chance against the slugs. Last year they all succumbed. Pricked out Hollyhocks, (second sowing and they look ok Chick). Put some compost over the patch where the comfrey lives - there's nothing visible yet, so hope to encourage it.

      • Neil is away until Saturday morning so I was able to put aside my Dutiful Wife head and go play on my allotment for hours and hours I decided to do the outside jobs today as the forecast is a bit showery for the next few days so I can do inside jobs like seed sowing, pricking out and finish off sorting the canes under cover.

Measured out the wildlife pond with rope so I could get an idea of how big it will be.....or little in this case! I thought 4ft x 2ft would be pretty big but it looked weeny Perhaps I need to bump another foot on....back to the drawing board...

Dug over the final stretch of bed next to the polytunnel which I have finally decided WILL be my new flower bed and wildlife area with a pond and boggy area and Bug Hotel.

Moved my Borage seedlings into the slightly cooler tunnel as they seemed to be wilting a touch with the heat of the greenhouse.

Got home to find a box of 280 summer bulbs had been delivered....so it's just as well I'm making the flower bed bigger this year!

Finally finished digging...thank gawd! Pond needs to be moved back a touch and made slightly bigger I think...

            • Busy day in the sunshine
Made a path through the border and created another bed. Moved all the foxgloves, forgetmenots and vinca off the line of the path and replanted them alongside.

Split another bed in two and put a pond in one bit, propped up on logs and surrounded with woodchip. The pond came from freecycle and the logs from my trees so its all free.

I'm up to 24 beds now Need another 6!

              • planted up a large pot with three main crop potatoes (Jersey Royals) I usualy use soil for pot growing of potatoes but as I am not planting my main crop into any of the beds this year, I am using one of the bags of compost that I bought in Morrisons, to fill the pot, and it looks quite good compost,(time will tell).
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

                • Only had a couple of hours at the allotment today as i needed to devote some time to my moggie minor!

Managed to transport four barrow loads of hoss muck to weigh down the cardboard and plasterboard on the plot. The fire was still burning from yesterday so stoked it up a bit with the small amount of wood that hadn't burned and was lying around the fire perimeter.
Locked the gate on the project plot. I was going to head for home but decided to do a bit of work on the plot I've given up. I dug up two gooseberry plants and one whitecurrant bush ready for transplanting on the other plot. I took up the pantiles surrounding a bed to be used on my project plot for a similar purpose.
I was going to take the 8 X 6 greenhouse from this plot to my new one but the new owner asked if i would leave it , for a suitable remuneration, which I agreed to.

I pulled up some kale and brussel sprout heads for the chooks.

There was a big cat sitting in the run the other day which came in through the 4 inch square mesh I have on the roof of the run. Egg laying is intermittent so I wonder whether he has been spooking the chooks. With a bit of luck the cockerel will chase him away.

                  • It was a glorious day at the allotment yesterday - shirt sleeve weather Forked over and raked the big bed at the top and planted my potatoes, then raked the rest of the bed really finely and planted some beetroot and spring onions. Dug over half of the other big bed, prepped a bed there and planted a good row of peas. It's looking better every time I go, which is a good thing as I am off to Italy on Tuesday and won't be able to do anything down there for a week. I had hoped that when I came home I would be able to put a mower over the lawns again, but they are so soft. I suppose on the plus side they don't actually squelch any more when you step on them, but even so ... still not ready. So, I got out my trowel and hand fork and did the bed on the front. Looks better.

                        Oooh fingers crossed for you

The corner of my plot is used by an older guy (I think the previous tenant who had my plot gave him that corner to use) but he's rarely there as he lives around 10 miles away and is often abroad with his wife...and when he is he only grows two beds of potatoes! His small polytunnel is shredded by the winter storms, his two greenhouses are always empty and the plot itself is just a triangular corner of mine so I doubt the council could rent it out to someone for the full price. He's really helpful and lovely to talk to and last summer he said he'd be using the plot a lot more this year which will be nice but if he does ever give it up we want first dibs

                          • Dug up some soft fruit bushes from my old plot. Transplanted six standard gooseberries, one standard redcurrant ,two standard white currents and couple of black currants along the fenceline of my new plot.

                            • Went in the veg patch and thought I must be a bloody idiot if I expect to get anything done when it is that blowey. Had a play in the garage instead.

Done two hotbed lids ready to be creocoted and plasticified.
Drilled block of wood and attached a roof x2 for bug houses.
Cut three short lengths of soil pipe and attached wire to be filled with bamboo and stems.
Done a bit more on my soil pipe/ home made feed stations but I can't find the safe place I put one of the soil pipe caps in
Put up a couple of hanging basket brackets on the shed ready for me kokedamas

Edit: just remembered I meant to make some crooks whilst I was out there - oops

                              • Rain has stopped play outside today

Pottered in the greenhouses and decided to plant my parsnips in their tubes (look roll tubes). Done 80 with the hope of a 50% success rate.
