    • An extended lunch break and I managed to get Beds 1 to 3 cleared of the hoops and in Bed 1 the over wintered cabbages that had gone to seed, and weeded including the bind weed and couch grass that had stated to re invade bed 1

The beds have been dressed with some fertilised and coffee grounds, and the 27 hole weed membrane sheet made Sunday afternoon is now on Bed 3. There is more information on my diary / blog.

      • Planted the rest of my broad beans today along the fence line.

That's about it. Not got a great deal to do at the minute.

        • Put in ten X fifteen foot long rows of tatties into my new plot after work yesterday.Haven't even filled 1/4 of the plot yet so think I'm going to need some more seed tatties. Pumpkins may be the wway to go for weed suppression this year.

          • Yesterday I set some bean seeds and sweetcorn out to chit. It's a little early but I want to leave time to buy fresh if these don't grow.

            • Cut the grass, mower coughed into life on the second pull which is a miracle given it's age and heavy usage. Good old school Briggs & Stratton smokes a bit these days but keeps going.
And then the showers started so I didn't finish the old lady next doors back lawn.

Still I got some grass cuttings into the compost bin and the season is underway.

              • Today I'm still nursing a yucky cold and feel grotty and heavy rain has stopped me doing anything up the plot anyway. Postie brought me 36 perennial plugs so I've googled these and worked out where they're going etc. May pop up plot later in the car with Neil and get them into pots as I feel far too dizzy to walk up

                • I woke up with a cold today & rain, but it stopped at about 11am & the suns out now & so are my plants. Off to the pound shop soon for more 3" pots & maybe some trellis, they're good for supporting heavy trusses of tomatoes rather than just a stick of bamboo. I made a little wall with it a couple of years ago, tied to bamboo sticks in the mud,it looked good like screening, held two moneymaker plants.

                  • Encouraged my son to turn over the bits of my patch that were left to their own devices last year. My instructions were obviously not spot on because he has turned over my entire strawberry patch. Planted another 30 or so strawberry plants.

                    • Extended Lunch Break II - It's nice and sunny and last night I worked out that I'm going to need six beds just for the Second and Main crop potatoes, so I may have over done it on the potato front this year. With 12 full length beds and up to now only using 3 beds a season I have a 4 year crop rotation.

From now on it looks like I will be using four beds on plot 1A and having a three year crop rotation. And the pressure is now on to get the third bed on plot 23B in so I can plant the rest of the Main Crop potatoes.

The photograph attached shows bed 4 cleared, turned over, and dressed with fertiliser and coffee grounds. Secondary glazing panels now occupy Beds 2 & 4 so as to help the warming up of the soil ready for planting the potatoes next week.

The weed membrane sheets were laid out on the hoop frame and left to dry, then brushed off and folded up ready for reuse this season.

The greenhouse was given half an hour of tidying, OK removing dross so that I can at least get in there now. More attention and clearing required so that the early potatoes in buckets can start off in there

                      • Feeling much better after two cups of sweet tea and a few pills I decided to nip up to the plot and pot up my 36 plugs Absolutely hammering it down outside and there's a couple of swampy bits but it was rather relaxing pottering away with just singing birds for company.
This time I didn't make the mistake of last autumn and wrote the labels out in advance for my plugs and labelled them as I potted them up! Also potted up my six mystery plants which still don't look like any French Marigold I've ever seen! I'm curious as to what they are now...

                        • It turned out to be a really nice day so I planted out my maincrop potatoes (Desiree). So that's five beds of potatoes done, just one to go (Cara). It's supposed to be decent weather here for the rest of the week now, so I should be close to caught up with myself soon.

                            • Took my tomato and chilli pepper seedlings to the allotment. Built a makeshift bubble wrap frame over them within the greenhouse. I had to take them off the window ledge at home as they are getting a bit leggy. Hopefully they will survive in the greenhouse.
