  • Was chilly when the sun went in, but it only really consistently clouded over a couple of hours before dusk. Not much wind, but a very chill one.

          • It was 2 degrees where I was fishing today at Waskerley and snowing, but when I got to the allotment later to cover my toms with bubblewrap it was 6 degrees.I still covered them though as I think the coldest time is just before dawn.

When I was at the plot before fishing I put a notice on the gate with plotholders names asking them to sign if they were joining the pumpkin competition. There were six signatures when I returned this evening so our competion is a go'er, which is handy as two of my pumpkins have just germinated.

                • Two more trips to Ewell to pick up more paving slabs from a person off freecycle, and finally I have enough to cover the whole of the greenhouse area, with three over that means I can now clear and pave the area in front of the shed.

                  • Installed my autovents today. Had to make a cuple of modifications to get them to fit the vents.

Bodged up a collapsing bed - no point in rebuiding it now as that section will be changed next year.

Dug up some more heavy duty weed fabric and couch grass from the New Territories - looking like its going to run underneath the rhubarb sthat may have to come up.Pumped my full butt into my empty butt so I could take off the tap as I found an adaptet for the new tap - that didn't fit either.

Siliconed a couple of garden tap splitters onto hose-lock style fittings so they can fit onto the water buts - then siliconed the hoselock onto the butt taps. My butts now have more silicon than Jordan. I'll see if it works tomorrow when I plug a hose between my butts to see if there's any dribbles. It was quite warm and the vents were open.

Sowed some parsnips, salsify, rapunzel and radish. I had forgot my pens and pencil so marked all the rows with blank lables - its not as if I'll forget what I planted is it.

Noticed some Elephant carlic starting to poke up from the soil. Forgot I planted them there. These were the corms planted last year - so they should bive me big round single clove bulbs this year and even bigger heads next year. I've also got 6 of the cloves growing away merrily.

Trimmed some of the larger shoots off the Hawthorn hedge in the New Territories then had a cupper in the green house as it was raining. It had cooled down a bit and the vents were closed.

Reconstructed the tent around the tom, etc so that my mother can pop in and wrap them up when I'm at work.

Fish are cold blooded, so it didn't seem to bother them! I was the only one fishing but still managed to come away with a breakfast brownie!

Big enough to win the competition hopefully! I was joint fourth last year, so must improve on that, as only the first three get prizes!

                          • Yesterday - hoed strawberries, onions and garlic. Moulded (spelling?) up my first early potatoes which were just peeping through, planted some beetroot and three more Autumn fruiting raspberry canes. Then I 'de-carpeted' two more paths. We are hiring a skip for next weekend to put carpet and plastic in - I have loads of carpet. Experience has taught me that it is a bad thing, so I am removing as much of it as I can. Gosh it's hard work though, as it has been down for at least 3 years and has bark chips on top; and of course some of the weeds have grown through and so it is held down by grassy roots. Then I came home and cut the front lawn again with the mower on its lowest setting It does look better.

I might have a go at the back lawn later. I went to put up the rotary drier and couldn't find the hole! Grass still too long. Need to empty at least one of the compost bins too. So that is a job for when FiL has gone home later this afternoon.

What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?
