What I did today - 2016

Well I've finished digging the first bed on the new plot. Took a while but there was couch grass, docks, dandelion and nettle roots to take out so I was going through each spade full to pick out as much as possible. I also wanted to lift up the weed proof cloth from underneath the bed - the depth varied from 6" to 2'.

Also dug up the rhubarb in the bed and split it. Some how I managed to get 7 rhubarb and one gooseberry out of it.

So that's one and a third beds dug - only three and two thirds left to dig then the hard work begins.

Pottered about in the greenhouse and planted up a sweet potato and a banana.

Two of my yacon have little green shoots, my perennial brassica are looking health, the sweet cicely has perked up and the vines are budding.

The leaves on my figs are looking scorched but they've spent the winter in a room with little natural light so I'm assuming suddenly to get the sun for so much of the day is overwhelming so I've put up some fleece to block/diffuse the light more.

Weather didn't become heavy rain but we did get quite a hailstorm, trapped in the greenhouse for ages, what a shame
Had a good tidy in there, have made some bubble wrap tents ready for more plants to go in there as and when.
Moved the coldframe.
Sowed more sp onions , noticed some of previous planted have emerged.
Decided to sow some more toms so did red pear , then some more chilli, hot chilli shake.
Sowed cosmos double click, sweet pea summer sizzler.
Pricked out some calendula , salad, zinnia jazz and zinnia early wonder.
Can't think of anything else

Ps my dwarf kale is up wooooo.

Nope! But I bought one little tray and there were loads of them, I did plant seeds but they failed to germinate, so I cheated! They may fail also!

Dorothy, I didnt know that carrots could be transplanted. Have you done this before?

Hmm. The garden centres round here don't seem to care about gardening, only about selling overpriced tat. Caveat emptor!

Dorothy, I didnt know that carrots could be transplanted. Have you done this before?

You can get trays of those round atlas type carrots that don'r put out a long tap root.

I've been putting off the allotment shed roof repair since we got the plot... The day finally came!
Off with the old rotten wood, New wood on, sealed and some galvanized corrugated steel.. should see me out!

Candy stripes...I like that!

Sowed some more tomatoes today. It might be a bit late but I'll take the risk.

Today I potted on my tomatoes into 5 inch pots. I'm really pleased with them, they are nice short sturdy plants and still have their seed leaves so obviously they haven't received any significant checks so far.

I topped up one of my raised beds with greenwaste compost and a sprinkling of fish blood bone.

Planted out my stuttgarter onions sets that had been sitting in a tray of soil for far too long. They seemed a little bit shrunken so I just hope they'll recover OK and start growing properly.

Also some beetroot grown in modules have been planted into the raised bed.

Despite having a stinking cold, I dragged myself outside and planted the poor Lidl gooseberry that's been languishing in its tiny pot for weeks. Then I potted on all my toms and the courgettes that I started way too early; they're like triffids now! Oops.

I now feel fully justified in flopping on the sofa with a cup of tea to watch Beechgrove.

Today l made a makeshift hardening off bench followed by some serious plant juggling. Potted on a few runner beans that hadn't been hit by the cold. Done some Re - sowing. Lots of mental planing for planting out so I have space and can get organised.

Finally planted some spuds in buckets, potted ulloco tubers, done some chrysanthemum cuttings and sowed a few odd seed.

Today! Although not the best to be honest! Recieved an "Happy Birthday" text from someone I'd not seen In years!

Got some "Chilli plant's" ain't got a clue what I now need to do with em!

Armed with 9inch pots n a bag of compost! Came to the rescue!

Quite envious! Lovely specimens! Obviously bought on line from wherever!

Ain't it always lovely to have a catch up n reminise old times!

Took some more seed spuds to the new allotment that my daughter gave me when they started to sprout. Planted all she gave me (a carrier bag full) and added two wheelbarrow loads of hoss muck. Progressed another six rows digging holes ready for planting
This was all AFTER I did the shoppng this morning (managed to blag a Primula Denticualatum for 30p from Tesco's) and made a roast chicken Sunday dinner plus washed a multitude of dishes..OH is poorly so I've been helping around the home.

I took a few piccies when i was at project plot which I'll add to my project plot thread once I've downloaded them

PS I forgot to mention I dug up two standard gooseberry plants and re-planted them in my new plot. Also noticed one of the plotholders tomato plants had all been hit by the frost even though they were in the greenhouse. Wrapped mine up with bubblewrap again before i left.
