  • A productive day on my new plot. First i called at Poundland and got some twine to train my toms up. I also bought three small rols of ties with there own little natty cutter for each roll and some tomato liquid feed.
Took the car right down close to the plot and dropped off a lemon tree that has lemons on it but is sickly and seven Monkeynut plants.
In the small greenhouse I fixed up nine training twines for the tomatoes up the side and three canes, tied in with a cross cane for the toms on the end.

I potted up the seven Monkey nuts into a long green planter. I added seven small canes for support and tied them in. I then watered everything in the greenhouse with tomato feed added.. The water run off from the bench pooled in the centre of the concrete floor where it isn't level. I mixed up some dry sand and cement and added it to the puddle. I then mixed it together and floated it off. Hopefully once dry it will stop water puddling!

I pruned all the dead branches of the lemon tree and gave it a feed.

Before heading for home i checked on the chicks, changing there water and food. The other broody is still sitting tight also! Half a dozen eggs were collected from the remaining chooks!

      • After last night downpour I decided that I didn't need to go and water the plot this morning after work so I popped into Wilko and picked up some plant pot 3 tier stand thingies and then off home.

Had a parcel of 11 legume seed packets for next year waiting - 9 bean varieties and 2 peas.

          • Decided to rescue the two fold up tables from my old greenhouse on the plot I've left. Problem was, i had to wrestle with a grapevine that had gone berserk along with a greenhouse full of nettles.

Managed to get all the stuff off them(pots trays etc) and get them collpased. Before I took them into my summer house i had to scrub the muck off them.

Did a bit more chopping of the branches I'd lopped off surrounding my plot, watered the greenhouse stuff and called it a day.

            • Today I weeded the squash beds - there's a couple of male flowers open on courgettes with flowers forming on the squash and pumpkins.

My runner beans have little red dots on them, the climbing french have little white dots and the tall peas have flowers opening.

Potted up 15 Asturian Cabbage Trees, 7 scarlet kales and 8 vates collards. Need to do the dwarf green curly kale and the Georgia Southern collards next - about a dozen of each. Popped a couple of the Vates into the sfg as I ran out of space on the tray. Now to find the space for 40 brassica plants.

Speaking of brassica plants - I have one sea kale seedling come through.

Potted up 18 chilies and sweet peppers to stand on the plant pot stacker I got the other day.

Planted out a couple of comfrey plants under the hedge in the new teritories - the soil there is the best on the plot due to all the leaf mold from the hedge which wasn't collected. Got another 18 or so cuttings to plant up under there but I forgot to take them down. Next year I reckon that I'm going to be swimming in comfrey concentrate judging by how much I'm getting off the patch I planted last year.

                  • Went to Azdas to buy some fish for tea - but all the fish looked poor. Was just cursing a wasted journey when I saw they had some plants for sale outside. As my chillies this year have mostly gone weird and fossilized I decided to treat myself to a couple of plants, at £2.75 each they were reasonable, and they look healthy - Yellow Burkina and Apache. The labels say to plant outside in 'a sunny spot, but not in direct sun' - what the hell does that mean? It also says to keep the compost 'moist at all times', which they certainly have been doing, as the Apache has a layer of moss covering the soil surface - should I ignore the labels and let them dry out a bit, keep them in the polytunnel, and in full sun? I would've thought they would prefer that - but then, as I said, I've managed to embalm my seed-grown chillies at the 6 week stage this year.... so I'm obviously doing something wrong.
I was tempted by the aubergine plants as well, but resisted. Must... resist...

                        • This weekend.

planted the spare tomatoes that wouldn't fit in the greenhouse after errecting a steel 'swing' type frame to suspend them from. Then strung them up. Picked about 1/2 of a bucket of strawberries but had to throw about the same amount away with rot and baby slug damage. Really disheatened with that so applied more blue pellets under the nets. The nematodes seem to have worked with the larger/older slugs but those 4mm long youths cause a lot of damage. Also I'm getting to not like bending as much so may create raised troughs for the runners to go in next year. Planted out 4 butternut squash, was given 6 broccoli plants by another plot holder (spares) that looked better than mine that have been in the ground a fortnight! Cut the canker off the apple trees and removed all signs of peach leaf curl and thoroughly cleaned the area removing all rubbish from site. we lifted all the onion sets that are blighted and herself planted our spare bedding plants from home back in the bed. Onions chopped and frozen for use. Garlic lifted and hung in the shed, it's a bit small but tends to be strong anyway. Hung some silver bits to scare off the birds that have pulled up 3 dwarf french bean plants, I think they are after the bugs in the woodchip mulch which is effective at weed suppression so I need to keep the birds off now.
Altogether the plot is looking full and green although I was concerned I would have too much unused soil just a few short weeks ago.

                            • Planted Celery (bought from the dreaded Wyevale Garden Centre, £1 for a tray of 9 plants).
Finished filling raised bed with soil for blueberries. Top dressed with coffee husks from local roaster and ericaceous compost.
Uncovered massive ants nest hiding under my geotextile.

                              • Yes I know that I only have to wait a few more weeks but could not resist the urge to pull one of my garlic...............whoop whoop I have cloves.

Now, to anyone who grows in small spaces I would like you all to know that, because of moving in November my garlic was planted into washing up bowls.

I put 5 cloves in each bowel and did not expect them to survive. Well, they have surprised me with their sturdyness so if anybody thinks you need lots of space for garlic - you don't.
