  • Transplanted leeks and red celery into raised beds
Granny on the Game in Sheffield

    • Searched through every brassica leaf for eggs & caterpillars, especially the Brussels tops & the young growth but everywhere & repetitively it's like a new hobby or something Planted out some leeks (7) that have been waiting for space. Put my last blowaway away that was inbetween my wall baskets & that made space for a couple of triffid tomato plants that needed longer canes, but I ran out so used string & a trellis from the pound shop that I had in the shed.

            • Watered plants in both greenhouses. Did a bit of weeding. Gathered some strawberries. Harvested my japanese onions and put them on the greenhouse bench to dry off.

Made a start on my new chicken coop. It will be sited on the end of the summerhouse, away from the boundary fence to deter trespass. Got the floor in and levelled up. Dug holes fro the corner supports which will be filled with concrete. Not sure about the finished design yet apart from it having a sloping roof parallel to the summerhouse. It will finish up whichever way the materials i have lying around the plot dictates.
I like the idea of a high floor as it deters rats and stops the wood from rotting. An added bonus is that chooks can shelter under coop in inclement weather.
The run will be parallel with the front of the summerhouse.

                • Got back after being away for 2 nights for a wedding. Greenhouse ok but will need watering. Picked some stuff. That's about it.
                  Another happy Nutter...

                  • Took last week off work, had thoughts of being down lottie as much as possible. Unfortunatly having two kids off for summer holidays meant I only got down there once and that was last night. Im sure every weed known to man had invaded, spent a few hours tidying the place up.
Looks much nicer now, finally measured to plot so I can sketch out some kind of plan.

                    • Weeding and watering (carefully - I discovered that a few goldfish live in the allotment's nearby water tank so had to watch I didn't fish them out when filling up the watering can!) Harvested a few veg and plums. Unfortunately the plum tree has brown rot, which I didn't realise before so I'm now also picking off any infected fruit. It's a big mature tree so there are still plenty of unaffected fruit so far anyway. Transplanted a cavolo nero and an unidentified squash-family plant. I thought it was courgette at first but the leaves look different.

                      • Watered greenhouse stuff. Dug two lots of tatties, some Charlotte to boil whole, and some Elfe for mash. OH wanted mash, so thats what she got!
The spuds I planted on the derelict plot have really bean a success and the lime in the plasterboard I added doesn't seem to have caused scab, so the only conclusion I can come to is the soil must have been REALLY acid as I suspected and the lime addition has helped sweeten the soil.
Only two rows of tatties used up til now out of about 40 rows so will be looking for interesting ways to use up my spud field. With about eight different types planted it should still give some interest on the plate.

                        • It's my dad's birthday today so popped down the lottie to pick some pea pods as he liked his pea pods just on the woody side (picked Champion of England ) - went down to the coast and cast them into the sea where we scattered his ashes.

As I was at the coast I popped into Marshals for fish and chips.

Popped back to the lottie and harvested 15 courgettes, toms, broad beans, garlic, peas and onions.

Found white rot in another bed. Not really supprised as when I took the plot on there were leeks, onions and brassicas in every bed so the previous tenant didn't seem to be big on crop rotation.

Chopped down the comfrey and emptied out the comfrey bin under the fruit trees - boy what an aroma. Hopefully there should be enough goodness in the oozing blackish goop left in the bin.

Done a bit more bashing of the see through shack and took the roof off.

                          • Had a mental few weeks, what with exams & then being on holiday - have hardly managed any time over the plot. Popped up there yesteday, the weeds have gone mental. This is going to take some massive effort to get it back under control.

Did manage to pick a couple of boxes of veg - the courgettes are more like marrows, and the slugs have eaten all my pea seedlings.

Oh, and the mole has had a field day, there are hills everywhere!

                            • Yesterday, having a day off, I attacked our communal tenement garden with gusto - hacked and chopped back so much growth that I ended up with 4 waist-height piles of branches and weeds on the lawn - what on Earth am I going to do with all that?
Then I went down the plot and planted out the snail, slug and caterpillar ravaged brassica 'seedlings' (more like mature bonsai, unfortunately) that have been languishing in my coldframe waiting for an available bed. 8 Cavolo Nero, 6 mini savoys, and 3 curly kale. They look pretty sorry for themselves, I don't know if they'll recover - hope so! Netted them against butterflies and pigeons to give them a chance at least.
Gave the polytunnel a thorough soaking with the hose, and filled my water butts (there seems to be a leak somewhere in my 4 linked butts).
Picked some beetroot and kale for tea. Ate a few blueberries off the bush... mmm!
