  • Snipped all the tops off my Rooster spuds as they were looking a bit sick.
Took advantage of the dry spell we've been having up here, and dredged the big drainage trench I dug in Spring. It'd nearly disappeared under weeds and minor earth-falls, but now it's looking crisp again. I'm thinking of lining it with old fertiliser bags, filling the bottom with rubble, and putting planks over the top so it acts like a French drain - and I won't have to step over it the whole time either!
A handsome young fox came and sat down on the thick straw mulch under my plum tree not ten feet away and watched me dredging with my draw hoe.
Fed the toms in the tunnel, and off to work.

      • That looks really smart BigMally!

Ive got some astroturf in the shed, I might have to try something similar when my OH gets around to putting up the greenhouses.

Popped up the plot to water, then it chucked it down. Pulled up the last of chantenay carrots, think they might have carrot fly damage, so i chucked a load. The tromboncino squashes are coming out of my ears, as are the cucamelons and raspberries.

Popped to homebase for some compost, whilst i was there I picked up five strips of winter veg (kale, psb, cauliflower, cabbage and leeks) for 50p each!

Came home and made bread pudding and roasted carrot soup

        • Thanks Bex, I think Astroturf may be a bit slippy when wet. No proof just my opinion...........I managed to finish the turfing or so I thought, as I have 15 rolls over.................

              • Bit parky today so lit the woodburner in the summerhouse and was enthralled watching the flames!
Pruned back and tied in some of the rampant blackberry canes on my new plot. Down loaded some graph paper at home and will transpose the measurements I took on to graph paper and try and make a visual representation of my planned keyhole beds.

                • There are certain times that I shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the internet with a credit card :-
                  When I'm tired
                  When I've had a drink
                  When I'm bored

After a 36 hour shift I decided to chill out with a glass of port. Nothing on the telly so twiddled my thumbs for a bit then turned on the computer.

                  Erm, so.

How many varieties of beans is everyone else growing next year? How many runner bean varieties? How about dwarf runner bean varieties?

                    • As the wood I'm ripping out the back is totally useless I had a delivery at the lottie this morning for wood to build the beds in the polytunnel as well as the wood to build my bean posts for next year. Delivery guy was at the site waiting for me when I arrived. Unfortunately he couldn't drop it at the plot due to the low branches on the cherry tree so I had to cart it down the access road on my sholders. Why is it that when you're carrying a bunch of 13 foot planks on your shoulder everyone wants to talk to you? Felt as if I should have Tommy Cooper or Eric Sykes there with me.

Pulled out my Lord Leicester and Champion of England which revealed a couple of dried leathery pods which I'll keep till next year. Stuffed the plants into the compost bin which is now full up.

There's been a pile of horse muck sitting on the site all this week and noone else has touched it. Thought I'd tidy the site up my moving it to a bin.

I'm now out of compost bins with a pile of stuff which needs moving into one. Checked the manky wood at the back and I reckon it would be better put into a compost bin than being made into one so I went emergency compost bin shopping.

                      • After work, me and him fed the chilli's and tomatoes. Then I nearly got half a bed weeded before it lashed down ( it'd been lovely weather all day while I was at work ! )
