  • Actually got some time in the garden so quite chuffed. Cleared out the cucs, put some fresh compost on top and put module grown spinach in the bath instead. As spinach is a bit erratic in its germination I'd sowed 3 or 4 seeds in each plug and about 80-90% germinate. Will give them a few weeks to settle in then pinch out for baby spinach.

Cut remaining leaves off toms today & yesterday. As they're still going & I needed the pots I topped up with compost & put spinach, kale & turnip green plugs in around them.

Evicted slugs, then taped off their entrance - OH didn't finish putting the rubber sealing bits on the louvre & I spotted a slime exiting out that way this morning when it got a big warm inside, after a happy night munching my veg

Got rid of pepper plants yesterday - not a great success this year.

Picked my first Spanish black winter radish - hot hot hot

Plan is to collect horse poo tomorrow pm after OH gets back from mountain biking
    Another happy Nutter...

    • Decided to build a brick path and discovered snail hotel in the brick pile.
Added calcium to beds in form of crushed snails.
Moved a pile of bricks and a couple of bags of soil to finish the bed.
      Moved stuff about.
      Picked toms and courgettes
Checked out Snadgers keyhole - looking good.

Went to my sisters 50th - went a bit ape

      • Weeded one small flowerbed.
        Picked windfall apples and pears.
Ate about 7 of the pears ( I may regret doing that tomorrow!)

Looks like a Moroccan ape welder! And I don't mean the keyhole garden!

          • Picked tomatoes from the garden.... Lots and lots of tomatoes. This dizziness means im pretty much stuck in the house at the moment. Made some tomato and orange chutney, sounds weird, but tastes good! It just needs to mature now.

            • Went up to the allotment around 11.30am with some bulbs (daffodils, alliums, fritillaries etc) to plant up as well as cat grass seeds to start off in a pot for my two and 36 pansy plugs. I'd just unpacked everything when I met Susan who is on the allotment committee (as well as being a keen birder like myself etc) and we started chatting away...as you do.
Yesterday the council had three large skips delivered to the site for plot holders to clear out any rubbish they had and in the afternoon three council members actually helped folk with the clearing. Susan is one of the local councillors and judges for Alnwick In Bloom and is often to be seen around town clearing up rubbish and today she was continuing a bit of work. She was tidying up a small tree by sawing off lower and diseased branches and one particular branch was quite thick so I got one of Neil's saws from the shed and helped her. This led to us both finishing off the tree which looks a lot better and then heading a few plots up to clear a weedy front area for one of the older residents. This took us until 2.30pm by which time I had to leave so I gave Susan a lift home. I got absolutely NOTHING done on my own plot but still enjoyed the day getting absolutely filthy, stung by nettles and chatting to other allotment holders

I've watered the 36 plugs though and will pop back up at 6pm once Neil goes off to work and get them potted up.

              • Cleared & strimmed last years Raspberry area, not sure what's gonna go there yet, knowing my luck it will be a load more Raspberries that have suckered.......................Found a discarded pallet, sealed it with Tarp & old compost bags, filled it with black gold & transplanted 30 Strawberries into it. Moved the power point that was inside the netted pond area outside so it's easier to access.

                • Went to a friends house & picked up a trailer load of nicely rotted horse poo. Will be wheeling it down to the veg patch as & when this week, then get some more before they bring the horse in in November & fresh goes on top.

Really need to finish thinning black radish - glad I planted lots as v tasty!

                  • Weeded another flowerbed and did a bit of pruning ( aka slashing back) of a buddlia and passionflower.
Aching back and wrists so time to come in!

Tis very rewarding to see the neglected parts suddenly looking more cared for isn't it?

OH had the enviable job of emptying one of the compost bins onto a cleared veg patch
..and of course- didn't he find the stainless steel veg knife we thought a guest had snaffled

                    • I have a hardy fuschia at my house which i lik but it is in the wrong place. Because it is old I will probably kill it if I try to shift it so I pooped three cutting in water. One of these has taken well, with lots of new roots so I potted it up today. I can now try and dig out the parent and not worry about killing it as i have its progeny!

                      • Weeded the rhubarb bed. Its a large bed - Queensize as rhubarb beds go - but not very productive this year. Might be because I keep moving the plants around and don't give them time to get established - or maybe they need a good dollop of dollopy stuff. Hoping to acquire some dollops this week
The pups and chooks "helped" me, as usual.

I'd see a doctor about that

Have shifted some of the manure to the veg patch & put some turks turbans in the gh to cure.

                            • Dug over a small section of the garden this afternoon and planted up my garlic. Spent some time weeding, tidying, emptying pots and stacking them all under cover before the weather gets any worse.
Picked some chillis and tomatoes. Chillis still growing and ripening well but the tomatoes have slowed down. How quick the sumer passed.
