  • I was supposed to be off last week (when it was dry & sunny every day!) but had to change to this week. No problem I thought - I was only going to spend a few hours every day pottering about the plot and reorganising things for next year.

It has rained EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!!!!! Today though there was a brief 30 minute window of blue sky so I popped up in the car and had a walk around the plot - mentally working out what needed doing - moved a few young plants in pots into the tunnel out of reach of the nibbling jaws of Mr Bunny....collected up a few dozen slugs from the bottom of pots and trays etc and released them in the bottom field on my way home. Back home I've sterilised, washed and dried (with the helping paw of Loki Kitten) a load of plant labels and will be printing out labels for these tonight. Ironically the next sunny day (ie not raining!!!) is forecast for Sunday....and I'm back at work on Monday
If I'm not on the Grapevine I can usually be found here!....https://www.thecomfreypatch.co.uk/

    • Am feeling your woe's Gilly! am feeling your woe's!

Cleared the loft, which I actually converted a few years back when eldest Daughter and now hubby got together, it being thier space, but have since "Flown the nest" with the intention of then shifting the stuff collected in the little spare room into the space now available, so I can set up a grow room!

Pilthy! This is all your fault!

But now having cleared it! Beginning to think I would be better off up there out of the way!

      Oh! Decisions, decisions!

      • Got to the plot just as the heavens opened. Decided not to plant out beans, peas and alliums and hide in the greenhouse.

Pulled out the last of the toms.

Harvested some sweet peppers and habanero.

Cleared out the cucamelons - got a bunch of tubers to try and overwinter.

I'm sure that I've read that they were eaten but I can't find the site now

          • Got rid of more rubbish!

I say rubbish! Not to some!

Son in Law just set up an "Hot Tub" all singing all dancing, rather smart actually, but had a few Scandinavian Pine accessories for a "Sauna" which just fitted the bill perfectly!

            More space awarded!

Then I stupidly opened the garage door!

            • Finally pulled out the courgettes which are a bit past it really and were in the way.

Planted out my overwintering onions (2 kinds), shallots (2 kinds), garlic (4 kinds) and Elephant Garlic (8 cloves)

I was thinking I may need more - 100 onions won't go far and I may need more than 72 heads of garlic next year if I'm going to water the Jungle beds with garlic water regularly

                    • Today I had to bring my lemon grass in to overwinter, its getting a bit cold outside so I trimmed them down to about 6" & split the grass into two pots, they're on my east-facing windowsill. Then I made a cuppa tea boiling a couple of stems that fell out, bits of leaves & one sugar. Tasted like lemon it was alright

                        • My garlic was absolute rubbish this year - it was not the garlics fault it was mine.
We moved mid Nov last year and my garlic ended up growing in washing up bowls (not ideal) while we sorted the teeny garden out so.......

Today, the raised beds have been prepared and I have used the smaller bulbs that I grew to hopefully get a less laughable end result. There are 4 various 'Wights' can't remember which though and 1 sacriced Elephant bulb all split into cloves and basking in the warm soil.

Not only that I can't be bothered to pay for new cloves when mine will do!
I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. Thomas A. Edison

                          • 3 wheelbarrow loads of chipped pine tree, it's fairly recent but good enough to mulch around the fruit trees on top of the well composted pig muck. The chippings are a bit of a walk away but the exercise was good for me.
Then spread 4 or 5 barrowloads of said pig muck spread on the lower part of the plot before setting too to double dig the patch with a hard ploughpan in the middle of the lower plot and dig in soil improver, leaf mould and cardboard for good effect. Half an hour or so of that and I was done for so slunk off to the TV couch and a cuppa.

                            • Today I cleared a bed of dead french beans and sweetcorn and planted 24 cloves of garlic from the two best bulbs of this year's rather poor harvest. Then I harvested my remaining maincrop onions - also a poor crop and won't keep because I lifted too late, but they will still be fine when chopped and frozen. Finally I lifted my carrots because the slugs have started on them. I've got a surprisingly heavy crop, given the poor initial germination and the summer neglect that affected the onions so badly.

I need to get back down to the allotment again this week, I've still got lots of potatoes to lift!

                              • Walked past Tesco this morning on my way home from work and they had a pile of pumpkins for Halloween. Had to check out the price - £2 per kilo !!! At that price I reckon that I've had about £140 worth of squash out my patch this year.

Had a nap before going down the plot this afternoon. Didn't do much - all I really wanted to do was sow some beans and peas to over winter. Sown some Aquadulce and Sutton Dwarf broadies and some Feltham First peas.

Picked some trombones and sweetcorn. Managed to get a handful of berries off the Himalayan Honeysuckle - mmmm. Also grabbed a couple of strawberries from the weeds and a hand full of raspberries.
