  • Had a lovely five hours tidying on the plot yesterday. Rearranged the shed, moved a lot of cr*p out of the polytunnel into the shed (or bagged it up to go to skip!) and dug up my perennials which I'll be planting elsewhere in the spring. I've bedded them down in the PT soil to overwinter. Amazing just how big some of these root systems were as a lot of these plants were only bought as dormant roots/tubers in February/March from my local Wilko and £ stores
Also dug up my various dahlias and have cut off the foliage and lain them out to dry off before putting them away into storage.

I was enjoying myself so much I didn't realise what time it was until Neil rang me on my mobile and asked me if I planned to come home any time soon

Plot still looks a bit of a mess BUT I'm starting to see which way I want it next year so next few months, weather permitting, will have me preparing new paths and beds a little at a time, bringing home black bags full of plant pots and trays to wash in the bath (I refuse to use freezing cold water on the allotment - wimp that I am!) so by the time March comes around once more I'll (in theory) be all prepared and able to concentrate more on the growing jobs.

      • Finished off the Chicken Composter. So basically I've sectioned off a dedicated compost area withing the Chicken run leaving a gap to get a wheel barrow in, tomorrow I'll clear the area & decant it into Pallet Bin 1. Then from Pallet Bin 2 I will take a barrow load of fresher stuff & put it in the Chicken Composter for the chooks to do their stuff. This will be repeated every week, taking the part rotted stuff out & replacing with fresher materials.

So pleased you explained..............you had me worried for a minute

Had a good morning shredding the remains of my chilli plants, emptied their pots onto the raised bed, then spread some muck on top, had a good tidy up in the tunnels, very nearly Ready to shut down the tunnels for the winter. Hopefully finish it off tomorrow.

            • Didn't go down the lottie today. I'm dog sitting which meant I spent the day buried in dog toys being climbed on, bounced on and nibbled by a Jack Russell

I didn't get to the plot today either. I had a dirty date with some copper

                  • Found a 9ft x 9ft piece of pond liner which as it happens is the same size as the Chicken Composter so said liner was cable tied to the roof as it was only netted. The soil was really claggy & I wanted it to be drier making it easier to manage. Anyways, I decanted 2 barrow loads from the area into one of my pallet compost bins & replaced the Chicken Composter with a barrow full of fresh stuff...............the fresh stuff has already been flattened by the chooks so will repeat the process next weekend.

                      • First a little competition - can you spot the difference

Well I've harvested my bag of sweet potatoes

So they don't do well in potato bags. Next year I'll try a different.

I wonder how they'll do in a hanging basket?

Picked my pitiful harvest of parsnips and salsify.

Dug a bit of mud and carted it about. Carted a couple of barrows of hos muck as well.
